Having profited by the bitter experience of past years, especial ly last year, the Tar Heel has had i : nothing to say this J:aU about "our prospects for the greatest football team in the world", about our private collec tion of All-South-Atlantic stars, about the tonnage of our line, or the smashing, power of our back field. The paper has attempted to preserve a discreet silence con cerning the team and our chances for a'vietorious season. The Tar Heel has done this because in the first place, as has hpcn said, the thoughts of our past seasons, when we had such jrlorious teams on paper, always leave us with an empty feeling. And again, because the team doesn't need to have some one continually dinning into its head what it can do or how great it is. Football has little connection with the art of suggestion, how ever fascinatingly elusive that art may be. One cannot by casually hinting at the idea make one team crush another. The team has got to have the confidence in it self born of long training and many a hard fou ght bat tie. Our team knew it could beat Da vidson, and all the wise counsel 'that ever fell from the pen of a poor sporto gram artist would not have made it do the job better. And so the Tar Heel, not from lack of interest but from the be lief that it was best to do so, has kept its mouth for the most part properly shnt, and has left the team in wiser hands those of the coach, for instance.' But the Tar Heel is afraid that its motives have been misunder stood. Certain it is the paper's apparent indifference to the suc cess of the team, the paper's ap parent failure to get behind the team and boost it, has been fol lowed by the students of the Uni versity. A casual observer at the Athletic ; Feld during . the af ter uoon when the team is practicing, would come the conclusion that no one here cares a rap what the team is doing. Scarcely a hun dred students are out there, and as for hearing a yell or other visible evidence of life and inter est save the perpetual cry of: campus. The team needs to see the idents on the sidelines, needs to hear the roar of organized cheering, for in no other way can the presence of the student body be felt. The students have got to get busy. It is up to the students of this institution to Vet out next Satur ay and show their team what they think of it, what they think of the team that has "'on four straight ffames and hs tied one of the strongest teamsin Virginia Orators and editors can tear their hair and howl for hours about college spirit and the like with out doing a particle of damage. It's time now to show something, time for the students to get on the sidelines and produce some thintr tangible in the way of "college spirit". Next Saturday will be the last opportunity for the students to see in action on local grounds the finest team in years that has worn the White and Blue. It will be the last chance to let the team and coach know that every man her" is solidly behind the team, Every student in college ought to be on the sidelines to see the game and cheer the team. The team doesn't need bon-fires and mass meeting to drive it on, but it does need to know that in every game and in every plav the students are there heart and soul. And besides, remember that this is the fourth game that has been played on the Hill this fall. We are always calling for more games, and when we get them we ought to, for the sake of con sistency at least, goto see them. The attendance at the other three games has not of such enormous proportions as to war rant the hope that more or even as many g:mcs will be scheduled next year. The fourth game must show some decided improvement. All the men who made the Georgia trip were struck with the uniform courtesy with which the Georgia rooters treated them. If a Sewanee man was hurt the Georgia cheer leader invariably came over to learn his name and then went back to his iron-lunged followers, and gave that Sewanee man three good cheers.
