In just a little , over a month senior theses . must be in for, approval. In eight weeks and six days another class of young JNorth Carolinians will be.prsented. with their diplomas, will receive the blessing of their Alma Mater and 1912 will, pass, 1912 will die. Spring is coming is almost here. The grass, is getting greener. The violets "little human, tremulous things are bloominer. The trees on the campus, are budding. Out, in Battle's Park the magic of. spring is at work too. The birds are asir. In the hearts of the oaks and pines the sap is running. Theearth is warming to its task of 'waking things up if you don't believe it, go down one of the walks and hear "The little brooks witnessing, murmer, presistent and low, Wi'th their ' obstinate,' all but hushed voices 'E'en so it was so!" I912fwill not pass, will not die. Soon under the Davie Poplar, the class will gather to sing its-songs of love and loyalty. And while a one of the1 class ' can stand be neath that tree 1912 will live, j Only the bad in 1912 will die all the bitternesses, the' disappoint ments, tthe hard things said and done.;' All that's good in us will come to life, all the' love and loyalty and 'unity, - so that next June "when Carolina sends us , forth' with a mother's benediction we will' be sons worthy of her blessing. Two weeks' and a half ', have passed since certain members of the Sophomore class bombarded Pickard's Annex. The council has met on the matter four times. At one of these meetings, two of the council were appointed to collect evidence. The names of about thirty men .who took part in the "feature" of the night's pleasure have T been, secured Nothing further has been ,done by the Council. 1 Nothing, absolutely nothing in any wayhas been ,done by, the sophomores. The, class, seems quite.-willing to let' the stain on its reputatatkm j go unchall enged.'1 And 'nothing has been done, by ,the student, body; as a whole. Whatever indignation may.. have been V aroused i at the moment has utterlj disapparcd. Nobody seems to care whether the guilty1 men are caught or not, There's an absolute, and to some an appalling lack of interest among" the students. Is this not a rather grave in dictment of our much boasted student self; government?' Does self government moan that tu- dents can brutally and mule cover of ni&ht attack oilier slu dents in their rooms with impu tiity? " ' The r council is but the ex ecutive agent of the student sel government. It is an ageni which cannot work unless it has the suooort of the students. In the present case it has failec Utterly as far as results are con cerned to work. Student self government has failed. Is it not time for the faculty to try its hand? : . WINSTON-SALEM TEAM TRAINING HERE From now until the 5th of April the men whom Clancy, has signed to play for Winston-Salem during the coming season in the Carolina Association will train on the lo cal , diamond., The team with which Clancy hopes to gather in another rag for the Twin City will be rounded into shape here for the opening of another pen hant race. Every man whom he has signed will report to him here and will take his preiiminary work out under the coach's watch ful eye. This means a; good deal to the Varsity, for from now on, till April 13, it will have the privilege of lining up daily against, experi enced professional pi a ve r s . Practice games between the Var sity and the leaguers will take place daily. The fans are going to have the pleasure of seeing "Red" Stewart work against "General." Carolina's red-top darling or the diamond of former days will struggle for mastery over the hero of the hour. The students will also, rejoice to ( see Jimmy Calmes, who has' signed with Clancy, once more around first base, f f , , Five men have already reported to Clancy. Others are coming in daily. The players on the Hill are: ''Red" Stewart, pitcher-and outfielder; Schumaker, first base man and ! outfielder; Galvin, catch; Gates; third baseman; Hartraft, pitcher. BAILEY QUITS TENNIS FOR BASEBALL Since Bailey, the captain of the tennis, team, for this year, has gone out for Varsity baseball and cannot, therefore,, play on the tennis team, it has become neces sary to find another man for this place. 'For this purpose a. tourna ment is , now being held. The entries and the man with, whom each will play, the first round are: Crouse vs. Busby, Lamb vs. Stockton, and Smith vs. Cham bers. The three winners will then fight, it out to see which, will make the Varsity team. In each event of the entries the tryrs out will have, three, meets each on a different, afternoon of? the, best two out of .three sets.. The first round , must , be played off by Wednesday, night, . , Baileys partner, on the tennis team is "Smack" Oates,.the win ner of last year's single, cham pionship. - . At Gcorg-c Washington Univer-. sity . the editor-in-chief of the un derirraduatc iaper receves free scholarship, Princeton's 1912 football scbed ule calls for only nine games in stead of ten, as previously.
