TEE DEED AND THE DOERi For the second time the Uni versity has risen to the occasion, handled a tremendously big-proposition in a smooth, efficient man ner, and pushed further home the fundamental thought that here is the University of the whole Sftnte of North Carolina. The second de bate of the High School Debating Union was a complete success from every point of view. Passing- over the preliminary contests between 150 schools and 600 stu dents, with 40,000 spectators, and the consequent uplift from hear ing an important question scien tifically discussed, passing- over the visit of the lf4 debaters, their welcome presence on this campus and the ardor of the succeeding- rounds of the eliminating process, passing over all of that , nd coming- rig-lit down to that nal contest in Memorial Hall an you fail to admit that the cene lifted a notch higher your conception of the University, of the State, of humanity? Two short-trousered, treble -voic ed youngsters on one side, and a country boy and a North Carolina girl on the other, and two thous and people clinging- to everything they said words are useless to to express the feeling- that arises and swells and overflows. uacK oi it ail we see two men iinn-ori ru,n v.c,vi fnn who are mainly responsible, j baseball, track, basketball, and though every one has helped: C. j tennis monograms. The thought "vho have been working for four comes from the one, the execution ' ycars; the remaining- man is a from the other; both are already graduate student who has spent big figures in North Carolina (lve years to. obtain his reward, history. Is there anything further to be said ? CARTMELL , Like every one else who knows QODS HUTCHINSON anything; about Carolina athletics the Tar Heel regrets the passing The University Lecture Corn er Nat Cartmell. The work that t"ittee announces that on the evening-of Monday, April 13, Dr. he has done for the track depart- r' , rr , ' . c 1 Woods Hutchinson, the famous meat cannot be measured in writer and lecturer, will lecture words nor can it be paid for in in Gerrard Hall on "Nerves, a 4. i n . mm. i;, . There were men who ran and jumped and threw because they loved the work; but there was no scicncv no system, no success. Cartmell started at the bottom and built: quietly and steadily, always looking- to the future. He had a seemingly im possible task before him, for the great majority of mcu he worked with had never seen a running shoe. But he has come out on top and "Moody Nat's Men" are known and . feared all over the South Atlantic section. This he has accomplished because he knows the sport from beginning to end, because he can handle men, and because there lias been continuity to his . coaching-. He leaves just as he has come into his ownbut with him g-o the best wishes! of Carolina men everywhere. Nat Cartmell is one of the biggest figures in Carolina athletics and his work and per sonality will be a tradition at Chapel Hill for many a year. ;.-:; . . , THE TRACK TEAM'S "CRISIS. The track team faces a crisis. Cartmell has meant so much to it that without his presence it may tend to become disorganized. Here is a chance for Captain ?ars and his men to show the stuff thev are made of. If thev can pun themselves out ot the present hole and leave behind them the record of another vie- toriousseason, we takeoff our hats lo them for meeting- the issue head-on and never flinching. Dr. Kent J. Brown, another Penn man and a star: of the first mag nitude, has kindly consented to take charge for the rest of the season, and the work will io straight ahead. The men need all the encouragement they can g-et. With a united University behind them and a competent eader in front they can yet make themselves the best track team Carolina has ever had. HARD EARNED LAURElT Elsewhere in this paper will be found the account of the four gym sweaters won at the annual try-out. The question of wheth er a man should be awarded the Varsity monogram for gym work has come up often before and will come up again. We wish to point out one reason why., we think the gym N. C, deserves its Senior Stunt a Whingdinger. On Friday night the Seni r Stunt Committee read the stunt manuscript to all the seniors who desired to hear it. Active re hearsals began Monday night and will be held six times a week, Qii that night the first act was be worked on, on Tuesday the second, on Wendnesday the third. The sam.v schedule will be lol lowed for about two weeks. PATTERSON : IS DRUGGISTS. OS t 1 1 1 1 '" Tl . IT -f r-L? . l ins university gi uucagu rj - - .
