NO NEED TO WORRY
In these days when the dogs of
war are snapping at our heels,
when military training and mobili
zation seem to be the next steps,
and when the war problem is be
coming an intensely personal ques
tion of what part you yourself are
going to take in it, it is reassur
ing to learn that there is no need
to worry. The following is the
philosophy of the French soldier,
which Life found in Miss Kathleen
Burke's White Road to Verdun
and reprinted; but isn't it worth
re-reprinting?
Of two things one is certain.
Either you're mobilized or you're
not mobilized;
If you're not mobilized, why, there
is no need to worry.
If you are mobilized, of two things
you are certain,
Either you're behind the lines or
on the front.
If you're 'behind the lines there is
no need to worry;
If you're on the front, of two
things one is certain,
Either you're resting in a safe
place or you're on the front.
If you're behind the lines why
' worry ?
If you're exposed to danger, lof two
things one is certain, ,,
Either you're wounded seriously
or you're wounded slightly. '
If you're wounded slightly there is
no need to worry,
And if you're wounded seriously
of two things one is certain,
Either you recover or you die.
If you recover there is no need to
worry;
If you die you can't worry.
TIIE MISSING LINK
Carolina has entered upon a new
.era in athletics. We have just
beaten Virginia in basketball for
the first time in our history, but
this was no surprise to us. We
Jiavo an excellent opportunity to
make it a clean sweep this year
with the gym and track teams go
ing good, the debating up to the
usual standard, and the base ball
team in fine shape. The next
thing to be considered is the stu
dent body. Are the students do
ing their share ? Of course we
all want these teams to win and
when questioned in regard to their
attitude they are all there. But
when it comes to an actual point
of yelling they sometimes lay
down on the job. This, it seems
to me, was the case at the David
son basketball game. Except for
a few short periods during this
game, the silence was oppressive
and as a consequence the team did
not display the brilliant work,
which it has shown since. It is
the general opinion on the cam
pus that we could lick them any
time, and it is so. The increase
of spirit was qmte noticeable in
the V. P. I. game. Say! do you
remember the result ? Then caiue
the strong V, M..I. bunch who had
beaten the big V quintette. At
this game the band Was on hand
and every one had lots of "pep."
Result we beat them to death
After the 35-24, no need to men
tion the game, a big bon-fire was
built and some two hundred of the
thousand who should have been
there, displayed "some pep." Caro
Una is coming into her own, 7 to
0, 35 to 24," and what shall it be
next? We have the teams. Al
we need is lots of "pep." With
the student body full of the old
time ginger we can't be beat.
"Give 'em hell, Carolina."

In biography, the verj inter
esting O. Henry Biography of Dr.
C. Alphonso Smith which has been
so widely criticised and praised
has arrived. Many other biogra
phies have just come, among
which are H. J. Ford's Woodrow
Wilson and Bradford's Portrait,
of Women.
Students who attended Dr.
Spingarn's lectures will be partic
ularly interested in the two
books of Benedetto Croce ;Philo-
sophy of Vice and the Philosophy
of Hegel. These are what some
of the students, who "take" phil
osophy, call "deep." It must be
confessed that to understand them,
they must be very carefully read,
but those who are interested in the
new movement in literary criti
cism will undoubtedly be fully re
paid by a thorough study of Grace.
(To be Continued)
Mr. A. R. Williams, General
Secretary of the Baraca-Philathea
State Convention, will speak to the
Baptist Baraca Class Sunday
morning the 4th at 9 :45 and to a
joint meeting of Baracas and Phi
latheas at the Christian Church
Sunday afternoon at 3:30.

SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE
DRAWS OUT A GOOD CROWD
Spring training for football
started off last Monday with plen
ty of ginger and snap, in spite of
the hot weather. Forty candi
dates a record spring squad got
out suits and reported to Coach
Campbell on the field behind the
South Building. The fact that
most of the men who reported goes
to show the interest the new class
has already taken in Virginia's
downfall.
The coach, assisted by a few
letter men of last season's team,
have been drilling the men in the
ground principles of the pigskin
game. Falling on the ball, tackl
ing the dummy, forward passing
and light signal practice have been
on the program each day. Friday
light line tackling and a short
scrimmage was held, the field be
ing too wet to stand much Work.
There are candidates out for
every position, those trying for
backfield positions being slightly
greater in numbers. The practice
will probably continue until the
hot weather makes it too hard on
the men.
SINGERS MAY STROLL AGAIN
Rumors are abroad that the
"Merrie Musicians" or as the
Tar Heel facetiously styled them
two weeks ago "those good look
ing fellows" are to stroll forth to
Greensboro on the night of the
Virginia baseball game to give a
joint concert with the Normal
warblers.
This is an innovation in this
state. Harvard and Yale have
been doing it for years, but this is
he first time it has been done here.
The boys will be called on for ex-
ra orchestra numbers and some
nore songs. The orchestra will
play a group of Moskowski's Span
ish Dances, and numbers by Grieg,
Tschakoif, and a Mozart Overture.
Vocal numbers added will be a
couple of songs by Mendelssohn.
The Normal's side of the pro
gram has not yet been announced.

A BOULEVARD TO CHAPEL HILL
Since our prospects for getting
an interburban from Durham to
Chapel Hill any time in the near
future seems to have vanished in
to thin air, the people of the two
towns should be especially interest
ed in Dr. Pratt's efforts to get a
model boulevard between the two
places. Dr. Pratt is trying to
have the state furnish a part of the
labor for the grading. Then he
will induce manufacturers of pav
ing material to furnish pavement
for exhibition purposes. It is un
derstood the Chapel Hill man has
secured the promise of co-operation
of many of the manufacturing en
terprises. The fact that a good
roads institute is held in Chapel
Hill every year, when many engi
neers from all parts of North Car
olina gather to study road improve
ment and pavements, will make
the manufacturing concerns espe
cially interested in getting their
products before the men who will
be very largely in charge of the
construction of good roads. Ex.

PROPOSITION IN AUTOMO
BILE GEOMETRY
An automobile is the shortest
distance between two points.
The price of a whole automobile
is twenty-one times more than the
sum of the price of its parts.
All automobiles are not the
same automobile, for if they were,
then automobile agents would have
nothing to talk about, which as
sumption is absolutely absurd.
