Athletic Notes Nobody can deny that the job was done according to Iloyle. As Shakespeare has it, it was done well and done quickly. That was the first game of ten stretched over a period of seven years that a Caro lina quint has wrested from our scrappy neighbors, and as Presi dent Graham put it, "victories over Virginia are becoming a habit." Nobody can deny that the football team deserved the highest credit for breaking a long line of defeats, but how about basketball ? Very few people take basketball serious ly, or as seriously as it should be taken. "A good game" we say, but it is not football, it is not as "classy" . as baseball. But the truth of the matter is that train ing for basketball is as severe as that for football. It is rougher than football, takes more of the "old pep" than does the game with the pigskin, and is just as inter esting, if not more so. The coach has been up against it this year: he. has created a team out of al most nothing, a team, which, once having hit its stride, nothing but the banner team from Lexington could stop, and our boys played a game there that scared the Wash ington and Leo men half to death. This team is ours, made up of men from Carolina, Carolina men every one of them. Have we nothing to give them to show our apprecia tion? Let us buy gold footballs, but we must not bo blind to the part of the catalogue dealing withe miscellany. And to put gold basketballs. Personally we see no reason why the pool should not be filled with wrater. It is rather soon, but with the number of events on foot for the classes to take part in, why not let the dolphins, or whatever they are called, get warmed up or cool ed off a little. That electric light looks lonesome hanging out over the big tub. Let's put something in there to dispell the spirit of soli tude. v With the classes playing bas ketball and baseball, and the Var sity indulging in track, baseball, basketball and football, it is rather hard on the man of ordinary intel ligence to decide what to go out for, especially if he cannot do any of them at all. There is however no excuse for anyone not going out for something, for if he does not like what he went out for first, he can stop and try them all, this be ing a free country, and especially a free campus with a long list of activities to indulge in. Oyez, Oyez, all men wishing to get in the Spring tryout in the Gym, would better get busy and learn to fall noiselessly and grace fully from the apparatus, for after the March winds have ceased to blow their moaning shrieks or shrieking moans,--the judges with belligerent eye will watch the young huskies in their efforts to break their own necks. The more the merrier. SHAKESPEAREAN NUMBER OF STUDIES IN PHILOLOGY (Continued from Page One) paper is to be on Spenser and both Epenser and Milton are studied in papers by Professors Hanford and Greenlaw of this University. With such a world of scholar ship as its field Studies in Philol ogy has received the commendation of leading scholars not only of America but of the world. Dr. J. Hoops, the distinguished professor of English Philology in the Uni versity of Heidelberg, has written, "We highly appreciate the value of your Studies and I avail myself of the opportunity to thank you for forwarding them regularly." Professor J. M. Manly, editor and founder of Modern Philology, pub lished by the University of Chica go, writes, "I congratulate you on the excellence of the Studies and your ability to publish them." Similar testimonials have come from Dean Walter Miller of the University of Missouri, Professor Curtis Page of Dartmouth, and W. P. Trent, of Columbia. ' With this record and with the certainty that the way is open for the making of one of the great scholarly journals of America the call has gone out for the financial support of friends and alumni in the state and in the South. Every cent of income is now spent for printing and distribution. There are no expenses' of editing. Plans are being made for other special and unique services equal to that rendered by the forth-coming Eli- it through it is necessary that the resources of the publication be in creased. The prisoner threw the maga zines across his cell in disgust, and cursed eloquently. "Nothin' but continued stories," he growled, "an' I'm to be hung next Tuesday." Chicago Herald.
