THE GRADUATE SCHOOL NOW RAPIDLY EXPANDING EIGHTEEN TEACHING FELLOW- SHIPS WORTH FIVE HUN ;i DRED DOLLARS AWARD V; ED ANNUALLY FRENCH EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIPS Eighteen teaching fellowships, each worth $500, are now offered by the Graduate School of the University. They are open to men who have a bachelor's degree from a standard college or university and they are available in the departments of Botany, English, Chemistry, Geology, History and Government, Mathemat ics, and Romance Languages. Through these fellowships a man spends part of his time in instruc tion, but opportunity is also offered for a large amount of time in grad uate study. Application for these fel lowships are maae to uean HJdwm Greenlaw who is chairman of the committee on appointments. Graduate students are eligible as applicants for the American Field Service Fellowships for French Uni versities. The followships are award ed for advanced study in France to students selected from American col leges by the Advisory Board, made up of American and French educators of which Dr. Greenlaw is a mem ber. The fellowships are valued at about $2,200 a year and may be used in any one of twenty or more French . Universities and include more than thirty fields of study. 1920 FOOTBALL TEAM TO PLAY EIGHT GAMES FOUR GAMES TO BE PLAYED ON HILL AT CHARLOTTESVILLE ON THANKSGIVING ANNUAL PRIZE AND MEDAL AWARDS ARE MADE THREE GO TO WOMEN MANGUM MEDAL TO TOWNSEND ! The several prizes and medals for the past year were awarded as fol lows: C. Edwards The William Cain prize in Mathematics. F. D. Bell The Eben Alexander prize in Greek. Frances Womble The Early Eng lish Text Society prize. Eight games will be played by the 1920 football team according to sched ule made public by Graduate Man ager Woollen; ending up with the annual Carolina-Virginia classic which will be played at Charlottes ville this year, the seat of the Uni versity of Virginia. This is in ac cordance with the plan agreed upon iwo years ago that the game should alternate between the two states and should be played at the seats of the two universities. The schedule for next year is: October 2 Wake For est at Chape Hill; October 9 Yale at New Haven; October 16 University of South Carolina at Chapel Hill; October 21 N. C. State at Raleigh; October 30 Maryland State at Chapel Hill; November 6 V. M. I .at Chapel Hill; November 13 Davidson at Winston-Salem; and November 25 University of Virginia at Charlottes ville. Folger A. Townsend The Mangum Medal. i UNIVERSITY OF PARIS SENDS BRONZE MEDAL A TRIBUTE TO THE FORTY-ONE UNIVERSITY MEN WHO DIED IN WORLD WAR Mr. Charles T. Woollen, Business Manager of the University, left the Hill Saturday for an extended visit to the larger institutions of the North and East to study their methods of housing their students, to use in meeting our situation here. RECEIVED BY PRESIDENT CHASE President Chase received from the rector of the University of Paris a handsome bronze medal sent to the University of North Carolina by the University of Paris in appreciation of services rendered during the war. The medal is about) six inches in diameter and the work on both sides is artistically and beautifully done. One one side is a representation of some ' of the old buildings ait the University of Paris and these words in Latin: "The University of Paris hails her most loyal sister." On the other side is a picture of Justice with her sword and an inscription reading "With book and with sword knowledge become sthe instrument of justice 1914-1918." The medal is received as a sincere tribute to the forty-one University men who died in the war, to the more than 2,300 University students and alumni who, first and last, were in the militalrV and naval service of the United States, and to the many different kinds of home service rend ered by the University in lectures, pamphlets, bulletins, training and ex tension work. vaulting 11 feet 2, and Nichols' mak ing the highest score at the South Atlantic meet, with three first places, in the shot put, the discus and javelin throws. William Royall will lead the team next year. State Champions in Baseball After losing two heart-breaking games to Virginia, 4, to 3 and 8to 7, both of them torn away in the 9th inning, the Carolina baseball team came back toward the end of the sea son and slashed and fought its way to the state championship by winning three brilliant and decisive contests from Wake Forest, 8 to 0, from A. and E., 6 to 2, and from Trinity, 2 to 1. Inside the state games were won from Elon, Guilford, and two from Trinity. Wake Forest split even, winning the first, 8 to 1, but losing the second, 8 to 0. A. and E. won the first game, 6 to 5, but Car olina took the series by winning the next two, 9 to 0, and 6 to 2. In all, Carolina won 8 games, lost 9, and tied 2. The individual star of the team was "Lefty" Wilson, who pitched the last thrpe games within five days, winning thekn all and incidentally breaking a world's record in his last game by throwing 70 balls in 12 innings. In the first 9 innings he three only 52 balls. In 10 of the innings only 3 men faced him; in the other two he threw to 4 men each, a total of 38 batters. Lowe, first baseman, and Mc Lean, second baseman, were the heavy hitters. Captain Feimster, third baseman, will be succeeded next year by Wilson. William Lourcey was coach. Spencer Breaks State Record The track team, under the leader ship of Captain Spencer and Dr. Kent Brown, coach, walked away with the state track meet, scoring 52 points to 28 for Trinity, 28 for A. and E., 25 for Davidson, and 17 for Wake Forest. In other meets Carolina lost to Virginia but won from V. M. I. in a three-cornered show, won from Trinity in a dual meet, and came out fourth in the big South Atlantic meet at V. P. I.
