To Virginia goes the thing that we had rather have bad than all things else in the way of student activities of this college year; the football game. Many a proud Virginian is prouder tonight because of their victory; and many an enthusiastic Tar Heel is .gritting his teeth, and clinching his fists as he turns away from Lambreth Field, or away from one of the score boards that were flashing telegraphic returns all over North Carolina, and uttering "Oh", or "If", while still other Tar Heels who have shaken them selves a bit further from ' the score have stopped to tap our players on the shoulder and say "You did your best, and that's all we expect of you." But the football game is lost. The season is over. Let's while not denying the past, face the future. But first, we should say this to the squad: "We haven't forgotten the work you have been doing since early in . September. You lost the game doing your best, and we share the de feat with you. . The curtain has dropped on only one of the five of the intercollegiate athletic sports. And in addition, there js ahead pf us four intercollegiate de Dates, and two oratorical contests. If ypu would avenge today's defeat, you have ample opportunity The events ahead of us can't be won in a single day's outburst of enthusiasm; but by pre-season training whether on the track, the court, the diamond, or in a literary society hall. Work now and the rewards in the spring will glut us. But even this will not alter our foot ball record. In 1916 the Democrats won in the National election, and did not think of the 1920 election until six months prior. But two days after the 1916 election, the Republican party, under the leadership of Will Hays, set to work, and in our recent election scarce enough democratis votes were cast to be recognisable. Next year we play Virginia in Chapel Hill; and we can beat Virginia in Chapel Hill (or anywhere else for that matter), if we begin now. Other wise well, its of no use for us to argue. The best man is going to win, and the spirit of good-fellowship, of happy-go-Juckiness, and of enthusias tic outbursts alone will not prepare the best man. A weasel will kill the finest hen in the barn-yard. And yet the hen shows a finer spirit, is more democratic, is more useful, is larger, and has numerous other finer qualities than the weasel. Why is this? " ' ' Virginia to a scoreless tie. Coach Stanf6rd of Rutgers says "Virginia has one of the best rounded defenses in the East," while The Harvard Crim son tells that "Rinehardt is a wonder ful field runner. He runs with a high knee action that makes him exceed ingly hard to handle. He and Zunkel form a duet of the cleverest back field men seen at Harvard this sea son," which is echoed by the Nash ville Times Dispatch in "Rinehardt stood head and shoulders above any back on Dudley field" in the Virginia Vanderbilt game. And on the line the Atlanta Journal adds "Michie and Newman are without doubt the sturdi est pair of ends in the South." Now face the things that our squad has been against all the season. We all know them. Now, what? We make no apologies for our team's holding the Virginians to a single earned touchdown. We can ex plain why we did not win, perhaps, in terms of ourselves, but we will have to go beyond the squad. And that's another question. v : ; ' From the standpoint of the squad, our men are entitled to everything from us, as though they had swamped the Virginians. OUR ACCOML1SHMENT "It's better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all," The supreme glory comes in successy in victory; but success carries with it the possibility of defeat, life itself is threatened greatest by death, from our darkest comes our brightest ex periences; and so, let's see our part of a football game whose victory is not ours. ; v From Charlottesville comes the re port that never did a Carolina team fight more desperately against Vir ginia than did ours on Thursday. What were they up against? From Georgia, who yesterday completed her season with her goal line untouched, comes the report that her season's greatest achievement was in holding STUDENT FORUM A CHALLENGE To the Editor of Tar Heel: The Intercollegiate" Socialist Society takes this opportunity through the columns of your magazine, to issue a challenge to the members of your faculty or to prominent citizens of your community to a debate on So cialism. A number of well known men and women have consented to de bate on the affirmative side of the sub ject in the more prominent colleges of the country. Socialism is one of the most im portant problems in the world today and an understanding of its principles is essential to an understanding of the age in which we live. We feel that one of the best ways to promote this understanding among college men and women is to give students an oppor tunity to hear the arguments for and against Socialism presented from the same platform. The debate, if possi ble, should be held in one of the large halls on the campus. All communications relative to the debate should be addressed to the In tercollegiate Socialist Society, 70 Fifth Avenue, New York City. Very truly yours, Harry W. Laidler, Secretary. RED CROSS PUSHES THE TUBERCULOSIS STAMP SALES The Red Cross Christmas sale " is now on and the North Carolina Tuber culosis Association is asking your sup port in the Tuberculosis Christmas Seal Sale for the following reasons: 1. To provide expert examining physicians for the free diagnosis of tuberculosis. 2. For the employment of nurses to give instructions and home nursing to those unable to obtain sanatorium treatment. 3. To pay for treatment of those who are proper Sanatorium cases and provide material relief for those who are not. 4. To properly instruct the chil dren while in school in order that they may knowingly fight tuberculosis. This we are doing in a portion of the schools with the Modern Health Cru sade. The lack of funds prevent a larger number of schools from partici pating. 5. To provide treatment and health education for the negro that he may not become" a greater menace. The death rate among the negroes is two and a half times greater than among the whites. 6. To give graduate nurses an ad ditional training for tuberculosis work. This is done by post-graduate course in the proper school. 7. To educate the people of North Carolina in the care and prevention of tuberculosis by moving pictures, illus trated slide lectures, publication and distribution of literature, newspaper and magazine articles and through qualified lecturers. 8. To save the lives of some por tion of the 3000 that die in North Car olina every year from tuberculosis. Is not this cause worthy of your support? LATIN AMERICAN CLUB IS ACTIVE THIS YEAR Twenty-eight men answered to the roll call of the Latin American Cub at a meeting held on last Monday night. This is the largest attendance of the year so far, and is is expected that a good many more members will be brought out by the interesting pro grams that are being given. Mr. L. D. Martin conducted the meeting, the main feature of which was a lengthy but interesting paper on "Hispanic American Products Employed in the Prosecution of the War." After the reading of the paper a lively discus sion was indulged in, many points of interest being made plain by the round table methods employed in the discussion. The members of the Club then became the guea-ts of Dr. W. W. Pierson, Jr., in the History Room of Old West Building where a delightful smoker was held. The next meeting will be hed on December 5th. This meeting wil be in charge of Mr. WT P. Hudson who will discuss "Economic Relations , with Europe During the War." "Grieve not that men know not you; grieve that Confucius. you know not men."
