KERR SPEAKS TO CABINET
ON GREATER UNIVERSITY CLUB
TELLS OF WORK BEING DONE ON
GREATER UNIVERSITY
DRIVE
Reporting to the Campus Cabinet
in its regular meeting last Thursday
evening, President John Kerr told in
detail of the progress that has been
made in the Greater University Drive
which the students of the University
are carrying on through the Campus
Cabinet and a committee appointed by
the Cabinet.
President Kerr stated that the com
mittee had got in touch with all the
Alumni Associations, and that the
drive would be discussed by them in
their meetings for . December. In
order to further get the needs of the
University before the whole people, he
announced that copies of the booklet
which was recently issued by the Uni
versity entitled "The Needs of the
University" had been sent to four or
five prominent men in each county
who were not alumni of the institu
tion. A letter from the President of
the Senior Class of the East Carolina
Training Jjjchool informing the Com
mittee that that school was eager to
help in the drive was also reported.
As to the Dollar Campaign among the
students, it was announced that it was
still in progress, but was not entirely
satisfactory.
A lenuthv discussion then followed
on the breaking of window lights on
lhe campus by men kickinar footballs,
and it was decided to publish in the
Tar Heel a notice to the student body
giving them the facts, and asking that
this practice be discontinued.
The Cabinet also discussed the gen
eral snirit of restlessness and irre
sponsibility of the students of the cam
mis and attempted to find its cause,
but no action of any kind was taken.

Bill Ruffin then spoke of the class
spirit of twenty-one and was followed
by Dr. Carrol. Dean Carrol did not
speak on the law of supply and de
mand and said he would not discuss
the economic possibilities of anything,
but he did wish to question the pres
ent lecture method of teaching. He
said that the lecture method was a
German man product transplanted
from the German centers of higher
learning to the American institutions
This method is suited to the needs of
post-graduate students who only need
guidance in their field of study but is
not the method suited to the needs of
the undergraduate.
Dr. Carrol earnestly recommended
the consideration of this problem to
the Senior class and if possible the
working out of a solution that would
overthrow these objectionable meth
ods.
Dan Grant then spoke on the move
ment on the part of the Campus Cabi
net and the student body for the pur
pose of telling the State about the con
gested conditions on the campus. The
class then gave the 'Campus Cabinet
a vote of confidence in this work. With
the serving of smokes, of which the
co-ed members did not partake, and
of refreshments, of which they did
partake the second Senior Smoke came
to an end.

at the university. Most of these men
have stayed, President Chase said, be
cause of their confidence that the situ
ation would soon be remedied.
"We have accepted the gift with
deep appreciation." he said. "It en
ables us to face with greater con
fidence the critical months which must
pass until permanent relief can come
from the state. I should like to em
phasize the fact, however, that the
regulations of the general education
board will not permit anything more
than such emergency relief to a state
institution and that we were definitely
told that the board would withdraw its
aid after July 1, 1921.
