Mellon Delivers Second University Sermon of Calendar Year. The second University sermon of the year 1923 was delivered in Gorrard Hall Sunday niglit ly Dr. Sparks W. Mellon, of Norfolk, Va. He based his sermon on the story of the feeding of the multitude by Jesus, showing how an antithesis between human and di vine viewpoints was exemplified in this miracle. First of all Dr. Mellon spoke of the human attitude displayed in this story. The disciples were loath to attempt pro curing food for the multitudes assem bled by Galilee to hear Christ's teach ings. "This," said the speaker, "was characteristic of human nature. Man will always follow, if he can, the path of least resistance. He is inclined to seek some way out of a situation which will result in very little effort on his part. The disciples wished to send the people away to get food for themselves. "All of us," he continued, "are prone to shirk responsibility. The dis ciples had nothing to do with bringing the multitudes together on that partic ular occasion. They came of their own volition. Then why trouble themselves with thein! Let them depart as they came, and get nourishment wherever they could find it. Again, when a ques tion arises, when a situation involving real effort is encountered, man usually endeavors to plead inability. The dis ciples had only five loaves and two fishes, and were not eager to be trou bled with providing for the assembly. They had nothing with which to feed them; therefore, why not drop the mat tert But Jesus said, 'How many loaves have ye? Go and see.' The problem was solved, and the multitude away filled." Turning then to the religious or di- vine side of the Question. Dr. Mellon The MAN Store EVEBYTHINO THAT'S GOOD IN GOOD CLOTHES ASHEVILLE, N. C. .. He worked through his followers to perform the miracle. It is even so today. He does very little within Him self, but looks to mortals to carry out His work. .When men feel discouraged and ready to give up, let them remem ber how little Christ had to work with. His disciples had very little of the world's goods; neither had they any too much faith. Yet from tottering rem nants Christ built His mighty kingdom on earth through the help of man. He expects of every one according to his ability, according to the number of ' loaves ' that he has. " STEINER'S TALK PRAISED BY THE GASTONIA DAILY 3.. F.
