Tuesday, March 25, 1924 THE TAR HEEL Tage Three T.rlim.TTrrTTrnTTTnTTTTtTltllli:Uinag' SPORT QUOTATIONS FROM HERE AND THERE By CBILL COX Ttllllllll"twwTttf"'tmnmWWm" This column will deal primarily with Southern Collegiate Sporting news and occasionally with dope gathered from all fields, professional as well as collegiate. Don't bet your money on what you read in this col umn, boys, I can't be responsible to that extent, it's sort of a "one mans opinion on Sports" as Bailey Groome would say. So as to protect myself, I begin by saying as the financial boys say on their expensive stationery (We do not guarantee the above in formation but to the best of our knowledge and belief it is correct). Somebody start the ticker and lets go. We are going to have a better ball team here at Carolina than we had last year. All North Carolina and South Atlantic teams take notice. We are going to be hard to beat when the season swings around. ' Psychol ogy of the situation had a lot to do with our team last year. Llewelyn and Lefty Wilson were missing from the pitching staff, Fred Morris was gone from third base, Joe McLean on account of his work was unable to throw himself in gear around the middle sack, Red Johnson was miss ing in the out field. There was some thing missing alright. With the exception of Mule Shir ley and Sweetman we haven't any such holes to plug up for this year's team. They call Red Johnson, Red Top or Ivey Johnson at the Brooklyn Dodg ers training camp in Clearwater Flor ida. Red was playing good ball until he sprained his ankle sliding to sec ond base in a practice game. This kept him on the bench for about two weeks. His ankle has improved enough for him to get back on the field and if Red can take up his play ing where he left off he has a good chance of sticking with Uncle Rob bies outfit. - Hard Luck for Red, it may be the same ankle that gave him trouble on the football field. Larry Woodall, one of the best ball players the University has ever pro duced, will do his share of the catch ing for the Detroit Tigers this sea son. Larry is a good catcher, for he has an ideal build for work behind the bat and he can sock that agate, I've seen him do it. - Ty Cobb's team should finish near the top this esason. The Tigers need good, consistent pitching, they can hit the ball alright and play in the field but their pitching staff lacks quality. Trinity, barring fire, famine or pestilence should win the State title handily. They have a team of vet erans plus Willie Green a Greens boro high school boy who can play ball. But I can call your attention to the same old story, dope on paper often turns out to be bunk when ap plied to regular games. I saw the best college team in the United States playing Washington and Lee. The score stood eight to nothing against W. and L. in the eighth inning. The Generals came to the bat in their half of the inning and before they could be retired they had pushed over nine runs. The score now stood Washington and Lee 9, visitors 8, it was the same when the game ended. ' The Visitors were from the Uni versity of North Carolina, team of 1922. , Rhymes of a Ground Keeper I watch my incense float on high While in vain I pray to sever Cold and damp from my base ball camp Oh Lord give us fair weather, i The weather situation is playing havoc with the conditioning processes going on at the big league camps. Sunny Florida is one big cloud burst after another. College conditioning is being hampered in all localities, the lament of the Ground Keeper is not unfounded. Its a hard life said the paving stone to the cement block. Mule Shirley is making things hum around the first sack when the Wash ington American Yannigans play the regulars at their Florida camp. The newspaper correspondents always have something good to say about Shirley. They call him that snappy first sacker and so on. We'll know exactly what they are talking about when they say this about Mule, we've been seeing him do it for years. J have seen Joe Judge, Washing ton's regular first sacker play ball. Judge is the reason that Shirley will probably be farmed to some good class team for seasoning. Judge is one of the most reliable first basemen in the Major Leagues. George Murray, ex State College man and pitcher par excellence, should have a good season with the Boston Red Sox this year. George got off to a slow start last season on account of a bad foot. Charlotte High has a neat looking track team, they will be heard from before this season is over. Their man Gallager ran a pretty race in the mile. I miss Cap. Alexander out there on the Freshman field. You couldn't go to the athletic field last year with out finding Cap out there with his baseball pants and his bis: red sweat er, coaching and keeping things on on the move in general. Cap knew his stuff, he was a valuable man. F'S AND E'S POSTED The University took on a real col lege aspect last week when Dr. Wil son inaugurated the system of post ing the "F's" and"E's" on the bulletin board outside his office. For several days, groups of anxious students have gathered around the board, and scanned the lists in hope that their name would not be there.
