PARAGRAPHICS.
AH but to hear Brewster tonight.
Not that we are partisans, but that
we are interested. -
The Republicans are evidently plan
ning on getting a larger vote down this
way than usuaL
We would certainly welcome an an
nouncement that either LaFollette or
Wheeler would defend themselves here.
It would be better not to use the
word defend in speaking of the third
party. They, like some football coach'
es, evidently believe that the best de
fense is a good offense. -- "
A certain southern college football
team has been presented with 21 rab
bits' feet killed by de light , o del
moon." Carolina should be lucky since
she has a pair of Rabbit feet that's
alive.
With transfer pledge dates already
behind the fraternity's freshman rash
will now settle down to the final lap.
Freshmen are now getting free Picks,
free dopes and free trips that will not
be so liberally given fn a few weeks.
The captain of the wrestling team
should be present at the next dance of
the Grail in order to get a line on
some prospective" members for his
1924-25 team. The Order of the Grail
renders the campus r a great service
along many lines.
Lhapel Hill is a very progressive
community. The very latest is the new
uniforms of the police force. The brass
buttons and blue coat gives the three
guardians of Chapel HOI law very
metropolitan appearance. With these
around citizens should feel safer than
before. ' '
But another big Innovation is soon
to be installed as a part of the protec
tive system of the community. That
is the system of police telephones.
With telephone bells ringing like the
article in the TAR HEEL of last issue
describes, there would be a bit of hesi
tation on the part of a wrongdoer.
The line of yelling students in front
of the post office last Sunday afternoon
was a disgrace to the stndent body.
Students lined up along the sidewalk
and yelled and shouted at the cars that
came by. Such a manifestation of
freshman-like tactics is certainly not
at home on this campus and attempts
at other such demonstrations should
be quelled at once by students who do
not, participate.
VOLUNTARY CLASS ATTENDANCE
The system of compulsory class at
tendance in the University has been
in force here for some time. There
has been from time to time discussions
of the University's class attendance
policy which have presented views
ranging all the way from acquiesence
in the present condition of affairs to a
complete change of the whole system.
Several days ago a campus group was
discussing this same problem, and
many of those entering the discussion
expressed themselves in favor of some
modification or change in attendance.
No set modification or change was
agreed upon by all but the discussion
certainly pointed out that"! there is

some dissatisfaction with existing con
ditions
A brief survey of voluntary class at
tendance systems will bring to the
front the systems of the English and
German colleges and universities.
There a student may or may not attend
classes, but he has examinations to
pass which will require his knowledge
of the course. Upon. this requirement
is based the individual responsibility
of the student to acquire as much as
he can. This is the ideal plan, but
whether such a plan could succeed in
our American colleges where liberty
means license is the issue that most
American college officials answer in
the negative.
1 However there are American univer
sities that have tried and are trying
this plan. The University of Chicago
and Princeton are two of the leading
universities in our country that have
found the plan to contain a large de
gree of satisfaction.
; The University of North Carolina is
known for its progressive measures.
Upton Sinclair calls it the "Wisconsin
of the South." The thing "that we
should like to see tried by this pro
gressive institution is a modified sys
tern of voluntary class attendance. If
this should work then adopt the whole
English and. German system. Attend
ance could be kept on all freshman
and sophomore required courses Just
as it is at present and after these pre
requisites are passed let the voluntary
system take effect,
We believe that the initiation of such! a
a system in our institution would do
Question : What are you going to do about- the new bus com
petition? - '
Answer: I will endeavor to give the service that this line
has been noted for for the past thirteen years, Every change will
be for your good and for better transportation service. When I
was forced out of business in 1919 due to a complete loss by fire
the competitors on the next day increased the fare from 75 cents
" to $1.00. ... . ) .
On September 1, 1921, I put on a bus and brought the $1.00
fare to 50 cents.! Of course the competitors had to folio until
on Thanksgiving Day 'when the crowds rushed in to see the foot
ball game when they increased the fare to $1.00 again to prop
erly care for the crowd coming to such a game. Our busses main
tained the regular fare of 50 cents.
Question: Who are you going to patronize? Do you con
sider thirteen years of service ? ; ' .
Question: Why should you ride with C. S. Pendergraft?
Answer: Because of thirteen years of real service and be
cause of twelve round trips each day that are DEPENDABLE.
And because of STUDEBAKER closed car comfort.
