Long Beach State; Milwaukee, Gary Brokaw, guard, Notre Dame. The fledgling New Orleans franchise of the National Basketball Association got its first coach and first college player within four miles of each other Tuesday Coach Scotty Robertson of Louisiana Tech and Aaron James of Grambling. Tech is at Ruston, and both schools are up near the Arkansas line in central Louisiana. James wa the new team's first pick of the NBA college draft 10th in the second round. New Orleans traded away its first round choice to Atlanta as part of the deal for Pete Maravich. "We might have taken that guy on the first round," said Bill Bertka. Bert ka is vice president in charge of basketball operations for the still nameless expansion team. "I was really surprised he was still there when we got our turn to pick." said Robertson, the coach at Tech until midnight Monday. Robertson's appointment as coach has been reported imminent for more than a month. Neither Robertson nor team president Fred Rosenfeld would discuss the "minor details" that kept Robertson's appointment unofficial until Tuesday. However Rosenfeld said Tuesday that Robertson has been working with the team in an unofficial capacity for some time. "He has been involved with us at every stage of the procedure," said Rosenfeld. "The expansion draft was his counsel, and the college draft was conducted with his counsel." James, a 6-t10 forward, averaged better than 30 points a game for Grambling during the. past season. "He runs well, his outside shooting is good and he has the speed we want in our front lines," said Robertson. "I was surprised he was still there 28th. If someone had told me he'd still be there, 1 wouldn't have believed them." Bertka speculated on the reasons other teams passed over James. "A lot of teams drafted for their special needs, especially during the first round." he said. "Then the number of hardships pushed a lot of players down." He listed six players certified as hardship cases drafted ahead of James. Bertka said any weaknesses in James' game are shared by most college players coming into the professional ranks. "Few players come into the league skilled at doing things without the ball, playing the tough, aggressive defense that denies their man the ball."
