By RAY ' HOWE Football experts would like to go down to Kenan field house and tack up a little brass plaque reading: THIS IS THE HOME ' OF THE SECOND BEST TEAM IN THE . SOUTHERN "CONFERENCE. The Tar Heels have already re ceived that appellation in the columns and the summaries and the news stories. But don't you believe the columns and the summaries and the news stories. It is not quite as cut and dried as all that. Instead go down and watch the lads work out and then ask Line Coach Johnny Vaught about the wall prospects. There, they tell us, is the weakness. But Johnny Vaught will rattle off names, three and four for each position, and you will get the general idea that the first string line will be good, the sec ond string line will be good, and the third string line will be not too bad. True, "Touchdown" Trimpey will be missing, and Dick Buck will not be at end BUT Bershak will be at the other end, Pete Avery and Bob Adams are ex perienced centers, Hank Bartos and Steve Maronic are still in that line and Elmer Wrenn, Ed Palmer, Jim Woodson, Chuck Slagle, Danny Desich, Ed Hub bard and Ed Megson are all try ing for those guard and tackle positions. v Bartos and Maronic are ra ther certain to fill the tackle nosts. Gene Bricklemever and Horace Palmer are the stand outs for the coveted end job with Jack Kraynick alternating be tween the end and the backfield. Bricklemyer is faster and a bet ter pass receiver but the other two men have a considerable weight advantage. For the so-called "second best" team, it's not so bad. Grab a gander at the "best" team- Duke. In a practice game with the Elon Christians last Satur day, the second team failed to score against the Elon first team and the latter outfit -shot two tnnp.h downs throuerh the Duke reserves. Duke has a team, but the ac cent seems to be on the "a." Those same experts have been quite brash and put the Tar Heel backfield at the top of the list of Southern backfields. Barclay Back On Gridiron Former Tar Heel Player To Assist Skidmore The University of North Carolina's only All-American football player, George Barclay, will return to the Chapel Hill fold this fall to get a degree in physical education and to assist Coach Walter Skidmore in coaching the freshman football candidates. Selected by the All-American Board in 1934 for one of the two guard posts on the mythical team, Barclay accepted Andy when the doctor would not al low him to get into a uniform garnered last fall.
