Freshman Play GMA Tonight car prts Matt And Ringers Heady For Foes CHAPEL HILL, N. C, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1938 mmlv 1 - - PRINT TO . FIT . . . By Shelley Rolfe Get your copy of "Bound to win" off the shelf and dust it off, for only Horatio Alger, Jr., could describe the comeback our pete Mullis has made in the last three court games of the White phantoms. Up to the State game, Pete wa3 lower in the scoring end of the game than a Confederate dollar. But as soon as the Red Terrors buzzed into the Tin Can, Mullis started hitting the basket from all corners of the court. He hit adding machine totals with 16 points against the Ter rors. Against Maryland he fell down to 12. But, lo and behold against Clemson Pete really went on a point grabbing spree, and when he left the court with about two minutes left of the game, he had 17 points by the Mullis name. Double Comeback Pete's scoring comeback marks the comeback of the White Phantoms. Before he got going on the tallying end, the Phantoms were deeper in the rut than the Democratic party in Vermont. They had lost to Wake Forest in the South, they had been trounced by Princeton and nosed out by St. Joseph in the North. With three straight defeats, they were ready to run up against State, and prospects for a Tar Heel win were anything but alluring. But boom, Mullis found his scoring eye and the Phantoms were off. They beat State handily, and in the last two games against Maryland and Clemson, the Skidmore lads have not been extended. All of which leads to NYU. Don't look now, but the Violent Violets are in the Tin Can Sat urday night for a game with the Phantoms. The battle for NYU will be the final one of a hurried trip through the conference. They start tonight at College Park against Maryland. By Ralph Herbert Roffer Flashing the brand of play that a few seasons back earn ed for them Ihe mythical na tional collegiate hoop crown, the virulent Violets of New York University are journeying south to meet Walter Skidmore's White Phantom five on the Tin Can court Saturday night. Victorious in 10 ot the 11 games they have played so far this year, their lone defeat com ing at the hands of the Minne sota Big Ten co-champs, the Violets have averaged close to 50 points' a game, featuring a hard-driving, aggressive style of play that combines a whirl of sharp-cutting tactics with an ability to sink a good propor tion of long set shots. New York Skyscrapers The New York five will have a distinct advantage in height over the Phantoms, as four of its five starters, as well as a good many of its reserves, are well over six feet. Irwin Witty, Bernie Carnevale, Dan Dowd and Sy Boardman range from 6:1 to 6:3, while Jerry Harlow, diminutive passing star, is 5:9. There is no outstanding indi vidual player on the team, al though Witty, the center, is generally conceded to be the class of the outfit. Headliner of the two tilts played yesterday, was the Sigma Chi-Ph'i Delt Number 1 game. The Phi Delts managed to win 26-20, but it was not before a long hard struggle. Thriller The game was full of personal fouls and a thriller from start to finish. The first . half was close with Sigma Chi pulling out at half-time with a 15-13 mar gin. In the second half, however, the famed Phi Delt offense started clicking and by the end of the third quarter they had taken a 19-16 lead. The final quarter saw the Phi Delt team pick up steam to fin ish up on the long end of the count. Sigma Chi came apart in the final period to shoot and pass poorly. Quinlan Silent As Generals Move In Finishing up a week of prep aration for the Washington and Lee meet tomorrow night in the Tin Can, varsity and freshman wrestlers pushed themselves to the limit in a two-hour, workout yesterday afternoon. Both squads will taper off with a light session today. Coach Quinlan had not a word to say in regard to the chances of his varsity against the heavy artillery of the Gen erals, but he did rate his fresh men on a level with the best in the state.
