C, FRIDAY, MARCH 4, 1938 air eel 4& fACKMEN LEAVE IflDAY FOR MEET AT MARYLAND U. gix Make Trip; Coach Is Confined To Hospital Going north for the third time this year, the traveling track jaen of Coach Dale Ranson will enter the Fifth Regimental Ar mory games at the University of Maryland Saturday night but without the services of the coach, who is ill in a Durham hospital. Six men will make the trip, under the wing of assistant tutor Johnny Morriss. They will leave today at 1 :30. Sponsored by the University of Maryland, under the auspices of the AAU, the meet will bring together track teams from Washington and Lee, Duke, Catholic university, William and Mary, Georgetown, Maryland, Carolina, and possibly Manhat tan and Fordham. Undefeated Big Five 118-lb. champion Johnson Harriss and Tom Pitts, 145-pounder, are the only members of the eight-man squad to go to the tournament. Pick of the team, they each have good chances of bringing back titles in their respective weights. Last Exhibit Before Spring Vacation CLOTHES HATS HABERDASHERY SHOES Basketball Finals Ending the intramural basketball season, Beta Theta Pi, fraternity league champions, and Aycock, dormitory titlists, will meet this afternoon in the Tin Can at 4 o'clock to battle for the campus champion ship. The contest, for a change, will be played on the big court. Statistical ratings place both teams on an even ba sis. In the elimination tour ney each won five games, two by close scores. DORM BOWLING Here are the results of the dormitory bowling: Law School No. 2 380; Old West 374; Grimes forfeited to Mangum; law school No. 1 398, Everett No. 3 380. There will be no more bowling this quarter, but it will be resumed in the spring. Generals, Boke, Maryland, Uemson Win Games Todav - J SWORDSMEN TO MEETTOTTUCKY Fencers Have Second Match Tomorrow Ready to follow up its success ful intercollegiate debut of two weeks ago, the Tar Heel fencing team will meet the strong two weapon University of Kentucky squad here tomorrow night at 8 o'clock in Memorial hall. At present, arrangements have been made to forfeit all of the epee bouts to Carolina and then go through with the re maining bouts of the meet, but the final decision will rest with the two coaches when they get together before the meet. Strong Visitors Presenting an unusually strong six-man team, three fenc ers in foil and three in sabre, the Wildcats from Lexington will arrive here tonight allowing themselves a day of rest before the contest. Leading the invaders, will be foilsman and Captain Scott D. Breckinridge, Jr. The other foil swordsmen are Virgil Beasley and W. S. Riley. In sabre, Stan ley Hays, H. L. Riley, and Ches ter Robbins will probably do the most damage against the weaker Tar Heel group aggregate. The starting Carolina lineup is far from definite at this time although Captain Allan Bloom, Richard Gips and Dave Malone are almost sure of starting while Bloom, Gips and Roderick Mur chison are expected to round out the sabre squad. Washington and Lee Plays Clemson, Duke Meets Maryland In Semi-Finals Tomorrow Night (Special to the Daily Tar Heel) Memorial Auditorium, Raleigh, March 3. Three of the four seeded Southern Conference basketball teams fell by the wayside today m the first round of the conference tourney. Carolina, num- veLnxe' I6" before W&L; State' rated number two, dropped a battle to Duke; while Citadel, the number three team, lost a last minute ball game to Maryland. Tomorrow the semi-finals will be played. The 8 o'clock game will pit W&L against Clemson with the Generals heavy favorites, to march on into the finals. In the 9:30 game, Maryland will meet a favored Duke club. Movies Of Budge, Von Cramm To Be Shown March 23 Athletic Association To Pre sent Full-Length Picture Of Matches The Athletic association has secured a full-length moving picture of the tennis matches held at Forest Hills last Septem ber. Included are shots of the final match between Budge and Von Cramm, world's foremost amateurs. Also shown will be Bitsy Grant and Bobby Riggs, as well as several others. The showing will be Wednes day, March 23. Tickets will go on sale in the dormitories, fra ternities, and YMCA imme diately after the holidays. Ad mission will be 15 cents. Earl Ruth Named Guard On Big Five Basketball Quintet Bershak Makes Second Team, Dilworth Gets Honorable Mention For Squad Captain Earl Ruth, yesterday sojourning at the Southern Con ference tournament in Raleigh, was unanimously elected as a guard on the mythical All-Big Five basketball team recently chosen by collegiate sports writers. Jim Waller, Wake Forest's top-ranking forward, who led the Southern Conference scoring this season, was also selected by writers from every school vot ing. Carson was chief path-chopper for the Generals as he guarded and out-Ruthed Caro lina's captain, Earl Ruth. Kit went out of his way to make a monkey out of Ruth as he kept saying, "Are you getting tired yet?" Carson tallied twelve points, and ranked second in point grabbing to Bob Spessard who had 17. More than 5,000 fans, the big gest afternoon crowd in tour ney history, saw the Skidmore tots pile up an early lead, and the 5,000 saw the lead fritter away into a deficit as Carson, and Spessard went to town.. Washington and Lee took the lead at the end of eight minutes -of play in the first half and held . it until the bitter end. Second Half The half count was 28-15. In the second half, nothing broke right for the Phantoms.
