BBttB FRIDAY, APP.IL 25, 1941 CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA Freshmam- Ba Today orb - ffiffh ver 0 Phys Ed Marvels Bewail Lack Of 'High Class MuIIis Challenges Any Topnotch Team To Do Impossible By Richard Morris Those invincible men are back to neet auy and all competition in the scftball field," said Pete MuIIis, the oigbty mite of the Physical Educa tion department yesterday. Pete made his statement in refer ence to the softball team -which is made -T) of members of the physical educa tion staff- MuIIis, as coach and short nelder for the team, went on to say, "there is only one qualification a team cost have. If it "wants to play us, it must have an impressive record as we jneet only the best. The only team we have lost to in the past three years is appa Sigma, the king of the fra ternity league." Jamerson Breaks In Coach Dick Jamerson broke through the mfle-a-minute chatter to get in, as he expressed it his "two-bits worth." It was, "I have been the fielding and batting leader of the team for the past two years and I am even hotter this year. Pity the pitcher that faces me or the batter that hits one in my direction." "He is just a ball of fire," MuIIis said when asked about his newest! player, Coach Yow from High Point college. Tow, who was one of the hard est hitters and steadier fielders in High Point, is counted on to strengthen the infield. Siewert Pitches" Doc Siewert, one of the three best pitchers on the campus, will carry the hurling burden for the "Woollen gym nasium team. Henry House and Ham Strayhorn will share catching duties. The infield ranks along with Kappa Sigma's as the fastest on the campus. Coach Yow will be at the initial sack, Bo Shepherd will play second, Dick Jamerson will be on short and Marv Allen will hold down the '""hot corner.' Doc Cornwell will serve as utility man for the infield. In the outfield the- educators will have Vaught, Eonman, Bartos and Mullis. Rabb, Vance, Miller and Rad nan will be used as substitutes. While welcoming all challenges the physical educators think it only fair to inform teams that they are better balanced than they have ever been. Forfeit Gives UNC Indians Dixie Crown The Carolina Indians became the new champions of the Dixie League last night without even liftins: a stick. Virginia, the weakest team in the league, which Carolina was scheduled to meet this afternoon, sent Coach Al Cornsweet official not ification last night of their desire to forfeit victory over the Cavaliers. The Carolina team has a league record of 4 wins and no losses. Even if the Tar Heels lose the last league game to Duke, Carolina will still hold a .133 lead in percentage points. Took Bad Beating Virginia took a severe beating from the Indians in their first encounter, and the Cavaliers offered this as their reason for forfeiting today's game. The forfeit gives the Carolina men an additional period of rest and practice for the coming Duke battle. The game with Duke, which will be played on-either May 9th or 10th, is regarded by Coach Cornsweet as the key battle of the Indians' remaining games. Carolina knocked the high riding Dukes off their lofty perch in the last encounter between the two, ruining Duke's chances for the Dixie League title. 'Cripples' Ready All of Carolina's 'cripples' are ready to go once more. Finkel and Rosenbloom are all set, and Gugert's bruised ankle has responded to treat ment, The acquisition of the Dixie title is the latest feather in the Indians' hat. Baltimore papers last week, after the Carolina-Loyola game, called the 'Tar Heels, "the greatest lacrosse team to ever "come out of the south." This statement proves that the Carolina team is making huge strides forward in the sport of lacrosse and is start ing to gain nation-wide recognition. tPjTf " ZZZZ BEGAN WS BK? Babies' Game Is Warm-up For Deaclets By Harry Hollingsworth Having been so far unsuccessful in competition with college freshman nines, the f rosh baseball team engages Hillsboro high school here this after noon at 4 o'clock on Emerson field in a tune-up for the tilt with the Wake Forest f rosh tomorrow. Rain for the past two days has pre vented the freshmen from practicing since their defeat by the Duke frosh Tuesday. Unable to hit with men on base, the frosh were handed a 4-2 de feat for their second licking by a col lege frosh nine. Wake Forest over came Coach Jim Tatum's squad April 10. - The Hillsboro team should offer very little competition this afternoon, and the game should serve as a good opportunity for the men to get accus tomed to playing again after their two-day layoff. Hussey or Boseman Either Jack Hussey or Bill Bose man will take the hill. Hussey, who has been playing in the outfield be cause of his hitting ability, may have to return to the mound because of the failure of the pitchers to live up to their advance predictions. Boseman, a good, strong righthander, has al ready proven his worth to the mound corps by his showings in three or four games and could probably handle the high schoolers without mueh trouble. Dub Johnson, who was out the early jpart of the season because of sick ness, has returned to the lineup in the past two games and has hit and fielded well in right field. Should Coaches Tatum and Ham Strayhorn decide to shift Hussey to the mound, Johnson would be a strong recruit at the outfield post. Regularly a first baseman, Johnson went to the outfield when the infield was changed so Mack Morris could take over first base. Whiteheart or Cantrell Tomorrow Monk Whiteheart or Frank Cantrell will be the probable hurlers against "Wake Forest tomorrow. The Deac lets, defeated by Duke twice, are tied with the Carolina frosh for second place in the standings and would en joy a victory very much. Carolina won both games last year. Probable batting order for the Tar Babies this afternoon will be: Wray, 2b; Hayworth, 3b; Morris, lb; Cheek, If; McCaskill, cf ; Johnson, rf; Croom, c; Waters, ss; and Boseman or Hus sey, p. Cindermen Seek Revenge In AAU Track Carnival Duke Is Weakened By Loss of Men To Penn Relays Although rain has hampered work this week, Carolina varsity and fresh man trackmen will work out today in a final effort to prepare for the Car olinas AAU meet to be held tomorrow at Fetzer field. Elections have made it impossible for the Tar Heels to prepare for AAU competition, and therefore also for the Penn relays. Duke, winner over Carolina in a dual meet last Saturday, will be weak ened in the AAU meet tomorrow by the loss of its leading stars, who are to compete tomorrow at the Penn re lay carnival in Philadelphia. Moffat All members of the freshman track squad are asked to report to day at the track at 5 otclock. In case of rain, the meeting place will be changed to 310 Woollen gym nasium. This is important. Storer, Ernie Vail, Bob Spence, Ed Sargent among the sprintmen and Steve Lach and John Nania of the field event department are probable Penn relay competitors. Junior Affair Slated AAU spectators will be treated, however, to as much close rivalry as there was in the Carolina-Duke clash. Carolina alumni, who finished in re cent years, will return to compete in their specialty events, and against athletes from N. C State, Duke, and Wake Forest. A Junior AAU affair will be stag ed along with the Senior, the former being held, instead of on two days as in the past, on the same day as the varsity meet. Jack Milne of the Car olina freshmen and Archie Adams of Wake Forest, in addition to other standouts, will be put on the track in their specialities on the same day. Belmont Abbey is expected to join Carolina, Duke and State in the Ju nior division. Gantt To Compete Leading high school trackman for four years, Uob uantt oi Dukb is probably the most spectacular frosh performer who is slated to perform. Having thrown the shot put and discus distances equal to varsity calibre in the Tar Baby-Blue Imps' meet Sat urday, Gantt ranks among the best in the conference schools already. The meet, in many ways, will com pare with the indoor games held in Woollen gym last February, for com petition from all divisions will be competing. A chemist at the University of California has developed a method of studying hot atoms of a million de grees centigrade or more. I -i 4 Stirnweiss Is Set To 'Make Big Time' With Newark Nine By Ed Goodman When "General George" Stirnweiss jumped from the second base post on the Carolina baseball nine to the key stone corner on the New York Yank ees' farm club, the Newark Bears, the skeptics thought that the big step would be too much for the diminutive New Yorker. Starting out slowly in spring train ing with the Bears, George soon got the feel of the diamond and quickly got the nod from coaches to take over the second base duties. With each game he has been gaining confidence, and Newark papers are predicting "big things for our George." The Yankees, already well set at second base, are holding Stirny for the highest bidder. Other major league clubs, looking for infield tal ent, have already made offers, but Joe McCarthy, manager of the Bronx Bombers, is interested, and George Weiss, farm manager, is holding tightly to his advantage. A good showing at bat and a con tinuation of his masterful handling of second, practically assures Stirny of "making the big-time" within the next few years. Already a star in the international league, uie ucucj.u boasts popularity with the fans and an overnight success with Newark. George .Mallory, a teammate of Stirnv's, has taken over the left field duties for the Charlotte . Hornets of the Piedmont league, farm club of the Washington Senators. George bats in ciean-up position. Colorado College Forms Voluntary Ski Patrol COLOEADO SPRINGS, Colo. (ACP) A voluntary ski patrol is being formed at Colorado college and leaders of the campus movement have chosen as a testing ground the snow- covered slopes of 14,100-foot Pikes peak. Capt. Thomas H. Rawles of the field artillery reserve is in charge. 'The ski patrol, as far as we know, will be the only one of its kind among military units in colleges and univer sities in the U. S.," Capt. Rawles said. Coed Sports Schedule Friday 4:00 Modern dancing, 304 WooHea gymnasium. ' 4:00 BasketbaR. 5:00 Fencing. 5:00 Swimming. d-Out; . Teres Feimster To Duel Lef ty Springer In Mound Battle CBARLOTTESLLE, April 24 (Special) Rain today saved the Caro lina baseball team the use of one of its trio of pitching stars, and left the Tar Heels much more prepared for encounters tomorrow with the Univer sity of Maryland and Saturday with Navy. Their game with the University cf Virginia Cavaliers was cancelled this afternoon after rain had made the playing field at Scott field unplayable. The Tar Heels moved on to College Park, Md to meet the Terrapins. Springer Is Star Maryland boasts one of the finest pitchers in the East Earl "Lefty" Springer, who as a junior last spring amassed a high total of strikeouts while pitching against teams in the Washington, D. C, area. He is expe rienced from high school and sandlot play, and is known to be sought by several professional scouts. Should the Tar Heels draw Springer as their opposing moundsman, they will have a stiff battle. Hank Feim ster, having the most rest of those in Carolina's big three, will probably start. Both Lefty Cheshire and Red Benton pitched Tuesday against N. C State college, and are probably not yet ready. Duke Unbeaten Carolina ranks behind Duke as the second best team in the conference, with only a loss to William and Mary against six league victories. The Bine Devils are unbeaten. Cheshire will probably be called on to face Navy, but Coach Bunn Heam is throwing all of his best men into this contest with Maryland, for it is the only one of the three that counts in the conference standings. Before leaving for their three-day tour of Virginia and Maryland, Ger sten and Skipper Hearn promised to rehearse their parts on the team bus. Coach BID Fetzer and Trainer Doc White worried when they heard of the daily rehearsals they would be obliged to hear, but all of the squad promised to win from Navy as quick ly as possible in order to get an early start for home.
