Carolina Y&rsity, Frosh Track
Milne, Morrison, Van Wagoner
Star in Twin Cinder Victory
By Leonard Lobred
Carolina varsity and freshman track teams piled up tremendous leads yes
terday in the Carolinas AAU track and field championships, and won team
titles in both Senior and Junior divisions ahead of clubs from Duke, State and
Wake Forest. In varsity competition, the Tar Heels with 82 points were
followed by State with 29 and Duke with 17, and the Tar Babies had an
advantage of 66 to 41 over their nearest rivals, Duke.
Rich Van Wagoner won the most desirable victory of all a first place over
Hank Profenius of Duke in the splendid time of 4:23.2 in the mile. Van Wag
oner and Mike Wise trailed the Blue
Devil veteran for three laps, and on
the fourth Van Wagoner finished
ahead on a stretch kick, at least 10
yards in the lead. Henry Branch pulled
into third.
Dave Morrison repeated his stand
out performances of past weeks by
winning the 880 in 1:56.9, and later
returned to action with a fast anchor
1p? on the mile relay. The truth
should be known that because of vote
counting, Morrison's appearance on
the track yesterday was his first since
Monday.
State Freshman Shines
This pair shared honors with sev
eral other performers, however, who
made creditable showings on the track
and on the field. Mike Andrews of
State paced the freshman field with
firsts in the 100, 220 and shot put, and
set meet records in all of them. Bob
Gantt of Duke won the varsity shot
and the freshman javelin and was
second in the f rosh discus. Jack
Milne of Carolina outran a two-mile
field to win in 9:58.8.
Unattached entries split up the
team scoring considerably. Standout
among these was Milan Zori, former
State athlete who still holds the South
ern conference mark, whose throw of
135 feet 9 inches gained him a first
in the discus. Bob Heymann was
second in the same event. Norman

The Sports Page always has been
and always will be the most read
feature of the Daily Tar Heel.
This is the belief of everyone who
ever contributed to it.
The Sports Page this year intend
ed to present news of Carolina
teams, and to disregard other
schools except when their teams had
athletic engagements with our
teams. It has been the purpose of
the Sports Page to give due credit
to Carolina athletes, and to main
tain interest in all athletic activities
regardless of their scope.
With this issue Leonard Lobred
leaves. ' Beginning Tuesday, Harry
Hollingsworth, lower quadrangle
rising senior, will take over the
reins.
Frosh Game
With Deacs
Rained Out
Brightening skies and warm winds
Saturday morning failed to dry Gore
field in Wake Forest sufficiently for
the freshman teams of Carolina and
Wake Forest to play baseball yester
day afternoon, and Wake Forest offi
cials called off the game, at 11:30, 15
minutes before the freshmen .were to
leave.
The tilt was the second in two days
which had been cancelled because of
rain, and left the freshmen with just
tomorrow to prepare for the Cadets
of Edwards Military academy Tues
day afternoon. .
Three Games
The Babies face three other games
besides the one with EMI. Wednesday
and Thursday Jim Tatum and Ham
Strayhorn's charges engage Chapel
Hill and Hillsboro high schools and
Saturday travel to Raleigh for a game
with the" State frosh.
The cancellation of yesterday's
game left the Deaclets and the Babies
tied for second place in the frosh
standings in the state. The game will
not be scheduled again and the Babies'
games with State and Duke will de
cide their rank.

Four Errors
Help Middies
To Victory
ANNAPOLIS, April 26. (Special)
The Naval academy baseball team
was limited to six hits today, but three
of them came in the pinches and the
Midshipmen defeated the University,
of North Carolina, 7-to-4.
Jackie Stowe, tar second baseman,
was the star of the game, knocking in
four runs with two solid singles.
Both came with the bases loaded.
Ernest Smith, batted in the first two
Navy tallies, however, when he sin
gled in the first inning. The bases
were also loaded when Smith hit.
Captain Norman Smith hurled tbe
full route for the Navy. Les Tomlin
son, bespectacled right hander,. went
six innings for the Tar Heels. He was
in continual trouble because of wild
ness and wobby support. Lefty John
Cheshire, who succeeded him, fanned
five Midshipmen the final three in
nings. Smith hurled a steady brand of ball
for Navy until the ninth when he, was
nicked for three hits and as many
runs. An error by Wes Gebert to
open the frame started Carolina on its
rally. Then Johnny Hearn tripled,
Chubby Myers singled and Cheshire
walked. With two out Al Mathes sin
gled to score the final run. Ben
Browning ended the rally by ground
ing out to Stowe.
After Navy had gotten its early
lead, North Carolina reduced the
score to 2-to-l with one unearned run
in the fourth. In this frame singles
by Ben Browning and Charles Rich
were followed by a passed balK
Navy came back in the same inning
and scored three times on one hit.
Walks to Wes Gebert and Lavrakae,
an error and Stowe's hit accounted
for the runs. Navy's scoring ended
in the fifth as Stowe again produced
a nit inis time Gebert and Lavra-
kas had singled and Smith had walk
ed ahead of his blow.
