Tourney Spurt of Golfers
Gives Carolina 5th Crown
SINCE SEPTEMBER when the 1946-47 collegiate sports sea
son officially opened, the 16-school Southern conference has award
ed eight championships, and the smooth-swinging Tar Heel links
men's sensational performances Saturday over the Old Town Coun
try club course in Winston-Salem presented Carolina with its fifth
such award.
Being the fifth SC crown that Tar Heel teams have won this season takes
a little away from the sensationalism of the achievement of the golf lovers
of Coach Chuck Erickson, but the fact remains that this victory was probably
the most dazzling of the quintet annexed thus far.
Carolina had gone undefeated up to the Duke dual match last week, and
after the Blue Devils, long the dominant golf school in the conference, had
decisively trounced the Tar Heels, the Methodists appeared a cinch to walk
away with team as well as individual honors in the tournament.
The defeat at the hands of the neighborhood Dukes apparently had a tell
ing difference on the game of the Tar Heel club, though, and the results
showed the Carolina golfers proudly displaying the title they had won by
It was a big shock to Carolina students and football fans as a whole to
hear of the death of Cotton Sutherland in an automobile accident Sunday
night, and we speak for the students as a whole in expressing sympathy to
his family and close friends. Many of the football squad members and
Monogram club members as possible will attend the funeral in Laurinburg
today en masse, and Monogram club president Jim Camp has asked that
all students wishing to go, meet in front of Woollen gym at 1:30 o'clock this
afternoon. Anyone who can take a car and some riders is urged to be
present then.
a margin of six strokes. The aggregate of 585, which was a total of the 36
hole scores of the top four Carolina contestants, was 26 strokes under
the previous record.
For the Tar Heels, it was an amazing 67 on the afternoon 18 holes turned
in by dependable Dick Doeschler and a similarly outstanding pair of 69's
recorded by Ed Ashby and Junie Bailey on the morning 18 holes that netted
the triumph and the first SC golf crown for Carolina in history.
It was the first time since 1935 that Duke had not emerged victorious in
the links tournament, and the defeat would have been even more decisive had
the Tar Heels not lost five strokes to the Blue Devils on the last 18 holes.
That means that the Carolina crew was leading by an impressive 11 strokes
at the halfway mark, and as a matter of fact, they led by that same margin
at the three-quarter mark in the tourney.
The tournament was termed a great success, and 12 of the 16 Southern
conference schools4 were entered. Next for the Heels is a possible trip to
the Nationals at Ann Arbor, Mich., starting June 22. Michigan, whose Wol
verines lost by a good-sized margin to the Tar Heels earlier in the season,
is the defending titleholder. This victory for the linksmen may also be
another kind of a triumph. From the looks of plans which are still in the
embryo stage, Carolina may hav& Its own golf course by next year. It's
something Carolina needs, and continued interest in the links sport may
prove the telling influence in the drive for the Tar Heel fairways.

NOTING TRACK: A final count shows 14 SC teams entered in the annual
conference meet to be run here Saturday. This is a record field and undoubted
ly means the best meet in history. . .The Tar Heels, incidentally, who are
currently rated as favorites, will likely be hampered by the leg injuries
suffered by Chunk Simmons, Ted Shultz and Laddie Terrell. . .Two former
Carolina swimming coaches, Willis and Ralph Casey, will accompany track
teams here Saturday. Ralph is head mentor at VMI and Willis is an assistant
at State. .

The setback dropped the locals from
their second-place perch in the loop

between the two teams for the sea

for quick revenge today when they
slated to start at 3:30. Vinnie Di

probable mound opponents.

only one thing, and that a big track
carnival to be held on Fetzer Field
on Friday and Saturday. The annual
conference outdoor track meet will
provide all the thrills of a three ring
circus.
One of the outstanding events should
be the 440-yard run, and it will feature
such outstanding runners as Roger
Neighborgall of. 'Duke, last year's
champion, Norm Rucks of South Car
olina, Chuck Chambers of State, Don
Nelson of Carolina, and the three
standouts for the University of Mary-itrayel to Wake Foregt for a dash

der 50 seconds for the quarter will
be added a host of other top men to
make quite an event.
Eye-Opener
The 880-yard run should be another
eye-opener, with such stars as Neigh
borgall, Frank Magill of VPI, who
took a second in the indoor games,
Mark Burnham of Carolina, Egelund
of State, Stirling Kehoe of Maryland,
and Bill Orr of South Carolina.
Running is scheduled to get under

3:30, and the preliminaries in the
other events starting a half hour
later.
The team title will probably be a
dual between, Carolina, Maryland,
Duke and State College. Entries have
been received from, Carolina, Duke,

most of the way, Whiteheart came
within two outs of escaping the last
ditch drive that netted the Deacons
their win.
After Charlie Teague walked and
Clyde Whitener singled to center, Red
Cochran sacrificed both along the base

But the strategy failed. Shortstop
