CHAPEL HILL CLEANERS
was 67 years old and he had been
pastor of the Catholic congrega
tion in Chapel Hill since 1940.
At the solemn high mass held
in the Sacred Heart cathedral in
Raleigh Saturday morning, Bish
op' Vincent Waters spoke of the
pastor's intensive desire to be
close to all he knew and said,
"He hath labored well. . ."
Monsignor Lennox Federal
said of Father Morrissey, "He
was a priestly priest, one about
whom many anecdotes will be
told. He was cultured, learned,
gently humorous . . . beloved by
all."
Father Morrissey came to
Chapel. Hill in 1940 with his an
cient Franklin, after living in
Durham and serving as chaplain
for both this University and
Duke. He was born in Peel
County, Ontario, in 1882. He at
tended school there, and received
his Doctor of Divinity degree
from the Gregorian university in
Rome.
He held office in the arch-diocese
of Toronto and served as
vice-rector of the Catholic Sem
inary there before coming to
North Carolina in 1931 for his
health. He chose Chapel Hill as
his home because he "liked the
town." Before coming to this
town he was pastor in Kinston
and Raleigh between 1931 and
1935.
Present at the Pastors burial
in the new cemetery were Presi
dent Frank Graham; Chancellor
Robert B. House; Controller W.
D. Carmichael; James A. Branch,
Purchasing agent of the Univer
sity; many of the Father's asso
ciates in the clergy; and members
of the faculty and friends.

t
Let's compare yesterday with today . . .
that will give us an idea of what tomor
row can he!
Machine Power: Since 1910 we have increased our
upply of machine power 42 times.
Production: Since 1910 we have more than doubled
tlic output each of us produces for every hour we work.
Income: Since 1910 we liavc increased our annual in
come from less than $2400 per household to about
J4000 (iu dollars of the same purchasing power).
Work Hours: Yet, since 1910 we have cut 13 Lours
from our average workweek equivaleDt to two pres.
cnt average workdays.
HOW have we achieved all this? Through the
American kind of teamwork! An J what ia teamwork?

American teamwork is management that fays
reasonable wages and takes fair profits that pro
vides the best machines, tools, materials and
working conditions it possibly can that seeks
new methods, new markets, new ideas; that bar
gains freely and fairly with its employees.
Our teamwork is labor that produces as efft
ciently and as much as it can that realizes its
standard of living ultimately depends upon haw
much America produces that expects better wage
as it helps increase that production.
Teamwork is simply working together to
turn out more goods in fewer man-hours mak
ing things at lower costs and paying higher
wages to the people who make them and selling
them at lower prices to the people who use them.
What we've already accomplished is just a fore,
taste of what we can do. It's just a start toward a
goal we are all striving to reach: better housing,
clothing, food, health, education, with ever Tester
opportunities for individual development Surf,
our American System has its faults. We all know
that. We still have sharp ups and downs in price
and jobs. We'll have to change that and we will!
It w ill continue to take teamwork, bnt if wo
vork together, there's no limit on what we
can all share together of even greater things.
