PAGE FOUR THE DAILY TAR PA Cop Banquet Will Honor UNCs Oldest Grad Tonight The oldest living member of Corkle likes to recall about f ra the University of North Carolina, who is also the oldest living member of the National Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity, will be honored by his Alma Mater chap ter tonight. The occasion is the Third Annual McCorkle Ball, held at the Washington Duke Hotel in the honor of George Mc Corkle, graduate of the class of 1878. McCorkle sent the Carolina Phi Kap chapter word that he would be unable to. attend .the affair, but that he expected to attend Commencement in June. The senior member of the chap ter also reported that he was somewhat "miffed" at how the fun of Commencement had been, taken away from the students. "If I enjoy as good health then as I do now," stated McCorkle in his letter to the Carolina chap ter, "I hope to attend Commence ment at Chapel Hill, when I would be pleased to meet at many Phi Kaps as stay for Commencement. . "I am quite aware," he con tinued, "that Commencement is quite different from what it was in my day. It was three days of unexprcssiblc joy. I am a bit miffed at the faculty for taking all the pleasure for the student out of the present day Com mencement." McCorkle is a regular figure at the Carolina commencement ex ercises, and it is seldom that he misses one of them. One of the things that Mc- ternity life on the Hill was the organization of ' the group when it was reactivated after the Civil War. ' "In 1877," said McCorkle, "my fraternity, Lambda UNC, had a rather interesting beginning, I thinkv The- University of North Carolina, being the oldest and largest in the South before the Civil War, was prostrated during and after the War until 1875, when if was re-opened. In 1877 a Brother Phi Kap came to Chapel Hill, and under his spon sorship a few of us got together and re-opened our fraternity. About a dozen were initiated, nd in some Phi Kap room (fraterni ties were not allowed); and thus we carried on until the Univer sity opened its doors to all fraternities. While the Chancellor is in this country he will also preach at Duke University and Columbia University and will lecture in th University of Toronto and the University of Michigan. Chancellor Milford was edu cated at Magdelen College, Ox ford, and Westcott House, Cam bridge," and served for manv years as professor of philosophy m the University of Allahabad, India, before becoming chaplain of Oxford University in 1937. Three years ago he went to Lincoln Cathedral as Chancellor, a position that has the respon sibility of all the educational ac tivities in connection with the Magna Carta. The Library of Congress has informed Dr. Nash that it was the Lincoln copy of the Maena Carta that was deposited in the Library of Congress for safe keeping during the war, having been brought here for exhibition at the World's Fair in New York.
