It was the 19th of February, 1949, that the marines landed at Iwo Jima. Bald Mt. Sunbachi - atop which was snapped the famous photograph still dominates the scene today. Nothing much happens there, and only a handful of bor ed garrison troops remain.1 The island serves largely as a weath er station. Today, however, imagine ' you are a Marine who fought at Iwo. How would you write of the battle? Would you begki at H hour? .' x ' When the Marines first hit the beaches, shortly after 9 o'clock D-Day morning, they expected to take the porkchop-shaped island in about 72 hours of hard fight ing. The campaign raged, for 26 days and claimed 19,938 Ameri can casualties killed, wounded and missing. Upwards of ,23,000 Japanese were slain. Men of the Fourth and Fifth Marine Divisions made the initial assault landings. They.caryed out orecanous beachhead :-ch the eastern shore of the island. Navy and Air Force bombardments had pummel ed lwo'S;-defenses for 62 consecutive days. Before noon' the Marines had smashed . through heavyidef enses to move inland about 5Q0 yards. The beachhead extended some 4,500 yards' northward from the base of Mt. Suribachi. Some 7,000 Americans were ashore.
