(1-747-5) LOST 12 Continuing its program of of ficer procurement, the U. S. Ma rine Corps announced yesterday that Major B. W. McLean, and Capt. J. C. Fetters, Marine officer-instructors at the UNC and Duke NROTC Units respectively, have been designated to inter view qualified students who are interested in earning a commis sion in the Marine Corps Reserve. UNTj and Duke are two of the nation's accredited institutions at which potential officers are se lected for training in the Platoon Leaders' Class. Under this program, it is pos sible for freshmen and sopho mores to receive officer candi date training during the summer vacation months, thereby allow ing complete attention to aca demic subjects during the regular school year. Candidates who are selected for training attend two summer periods of six week3 each with only one six-week period re quired during a summer. During their initial training period, stu dents are appointed Marine Corps Corporals and are paid at the rate of $95.00 monthly; as transportation at government ex pense 'from their homes to camp and return. Both .terms of train ing are held at Quantico, Va., 35 miles south of Washington, D. C. Major McLean and Captain Fetters pointed out that students selected for the Platoon Leaders Class are enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve (inactive) and are assigned to officer - candidate training only upon their own re quest. They are subject to active duty after commissioning only during a national emergency or at their own request. After completion of the summer training periods, and whea a baccalaureate degree has been conferred the candidates are eligible for second lieutenant's commissions in the Marine Corps Reserve. Some of the candidates who have outstanding records during the training periods may be com missioned in the regular Marine Corps upon their own request.
