The Tar Heels, who dropped!
fuur htiaijuit decisions without a
victory to the Deacs last season,
have a hard task ahead to try to
unseat Wake Forest, defending
and Big
Southern Conference
Four champions.
The Deacons have lost only
fine game thus far this season
and boost a recent victory over
the professional Greensboro Patriot-;,
members of the Class B
Carolina League. Monday the
Deacs downed State. 8-3 for their
(list Big Four win.
Carolina also has an Easter
Monday triumph on the books.
The Tar Heels edged Duke here,
3-2. behind the pitching of Dean

To Meet High Point Today
An afternoon meet with High
Point High School in the "Furni
ture City" is on tap for the Caro
lina freshman track squad today.
The meet today will open the dual
h inde r i;ave up only one hit in meet season for the Tar Babies.

the 15-11 win, his first. It was
his initml appearance since he
had trouble with his arm earlier
in the season.
He'll have to be in top form
this afternoon to defeat the
Deacs. who went to the finals of
the NCAA tournament last year.
Wake Forest has a vfteran crew,
lu aded by All-America second
hnseman Charlie Teague. Teague
spearheads a lineup including
such stars ofiast season's nine as
shortstop Art Hoch, thirdbase
rnan Gene Hooks, and outfiielders
Joe Fulghum and Charlie Kersh.
One of Wake .Forest's most
clTective hurlers last year, Harry
Nicholas i3 listed as today's pro
bable starter for the Deacs.
Joe Proctor, a hard-hitting ex
secondbaseman, may replace Joe
Eldridge in left field while Dan
Whitchart may take over at sec
ond for Skett Hesmer.
Proctor, hampered thus far by
a broken leg. is about ready to
go and although he won't be able
cover much ground he hits a long
ball. There's a short left field
fence at Wake Forest and the
riht-handed Proctor is expected
to come closer to clearing it.
Sacrificing some defensive
strength in order to get runs is
also behind the move at second
where Hesmer has been playing
steady ball. Whitchart, like
Hesmer a sophomore, bats left
handed and will be more effec
tive against a righthanded
pitcher. With Nicholas starting,
Whatehart will probably be at
second.
