Dear II Carolina's mural teams came up with a complete reversal yes terday afternoon at Raleigh, by placing fourth in the Big 4 Sports Day Carnival, a point behind Wake Forest and six points behind the Meet's winner, State. Carolina had won tVir! championship twice in a row up to this year. State won three events to top Duke in a close race for the championship, edging the Blue Devils by one marker. 20-1 Q Winning for the first time since the Carnival was organized, the Wolfpack won the Softball, horseshoes, and table tennis events and outshihed the rest of the Miyal champs who were clone on the heels of State, but couldn't take enough, places. Duke placed first in the tennis match, while Wake Forest won in the volleyball and golf con tests. 0 Playing two rounds for each event, the teams were in nip and tuck contests all the way down the line, from softball to Kolf. Carolina was unable to place first in any event, but garnered a second place in the horseshoe rounds. Ed Cloyd and Joe Cur tis starred for the Tar Heels throwing many ringers and win ning their matches. In the IcadofT softball game Carolina went into extra innings before bowing to Duke, 3-2. Choo Regan went all the way'pitching a good game, but not getting the breaks. In the consolation Ma me, the Tar Heels walloped Wake Forest, 7-2. The Blue and White softball team failed to capture the softball trophy by not winning the third leg. The Tar Heel Mural teams had won the softball championship in the last two Big 4 Carnival Days. Duke and State have one leg apiece on the trophy. In the volleyball contest, Car o iu Jkwt ! Wake Forest and tne Deaca vrrnt on to whip Duke and become strong contenders in the early part of the day. Although Carolina lost in yes tcrday's Big 4 Day, they still retain a 3-1 record in the annual series. Duke has won once and State now has a win in the an nual affair. The team score: State 20; Duke 19; Wake Forest 14; UNC 13. H. Alexander i Will Captain Tennis Team Heath Alexander, senior from Charlotte, has been elected cap1 tain of the 1951 Carolina tennis team. He succeeds Clark Taylor of New Haven, Conn., Southern Conference singles runner-up. Alexander played number three for the Tar Heels this season and won 18 of 23 singles matches. Bill Albans, who has been high-point man for the Tar Heels, missed last year's meet because of a sprained ankle, but is expected to star this year. Wake Forest Frosh Defeat Tar Babies Fifth Time, 5-1 Special to The Dailv Tar Heel WAKE FOREST, May 18 For the second straight time within as many days and for the fifth time this season the Wake Forest freshman slapped down the Tar Baby nine in defeating the visit ing Carolina team, 5-1, in Wake Forest this afternoon. Hard luck Bill Lore pitched for the Tar Babies only to lose his fourth ball game. Carolina bats were dulled all afternoon by Bud Woodclief salvaging only three hits one of them good enough for a run. With two out in the sjxth inning Bob Henning, Carolina's first baseman, knocked a triple into deep right field and ran it out for a triple. GOTTEN - VALL1 - TREV0R.H0WARLT e I oday Field Events To Open 26th .1 Annual Meet By Bill Peacock Trials for the 26th running of the annual Southern Conference Outdoor Track Meet begins here this afternoon on Fetzer Field when 221 athletes from 13 schools compete ui the biggest meet of the year. There will be trials for all the running events except . the mile and two-mile and all the field events save the pole vault and high jump with the top six men qualifying for the finals tomor row. The trials begin at 3 o'clock. -. Carobna, winner of the meet for the past three years, will be the heavy favorite to win with Maryland, Duke, VPI, and N. C. State counted on to round out the top five. Clemson, Davidson, Richmond, South Carolina, VMI, Wake Forest, Washington and Lee. and William and Mary fill out the field. Last year the Tar Heels came out on top with 75 points followed by Duke with "47, Maryland 45, and VPI 22. This year there is a fair chance that the team will break their own record for points scored, bettering the 83 they rolled up in 1948. ; The competition is expected to be unusually tough this year with a strong liklihood that the big field will produce several new records. For Carolina, this game will close a fairly successful season.
