WINSTON-SALEM, Dec. .5- Fast breaks with- plenty of action dominated the Tar , Heel . eager s' third game tonight as they de feated the strong Hanes Hosiery semi-pro team, 75-58. , The UNC quintet was in Control of the game almost all the way, gaining a 21-18 lead in the opening min utes arid remaining ahead for the remainder of the game. Co-Captain Hugo Kappler and Howard Deasy led the scoring for the Tar Heels with 18 points each. Sophomore -Jack Wallace also played an outstanding floor game, netting a total of 10 points. Sub Vincent Grimaldi saw a fair share cf action and was good for 9 points. Center Hugo Hampton and Guard Dave Greer paced the Hanes Hosiery five ably, but were unable to hold down' the smooth working Tar Heels. Fouls . were fairly plentiful throughout the game and-, big Howard Deasy had to leave the game in the last half because of an excessive number of viola tions. Coach Tom Scott substituted freely throughout the second half, much depends on the sopoho and every man on the Tar Heel J mores. You never know about bench saw action. 'sophomores in advance. Team In Nation; Anderson RALEIGH, Dec. 5 (P) If the long-suffering basketball oppon- f ents of North Carolina State need ed any additional incentive to knock the Wolfpack from its lofty perch, it was furnished today in New York by Associated Press Sportswriter Joe Reichler. Joe peered into his crystal ball and found that State would be the No. 1 basketball team in the na tion this season. He wrote that State "is loaded," adding that "All-America Sam Ranzino and four other key lettermen, bol stered by the , addition from the school's brilliant freshman team, gives Everett Case the strongest team he has had in- four years despite the loss of the fiery Dick Dickey." -. - ' In the absence of Coach Everett Case, his assistant, Carl (Butter) Anderson, had this to say: "It's nice to know we are so highly thoughtvof and we'll do our best to uphold the rating, but it's really too early in the season to know just which teams are the best. . "I've seen Kansas State and Long Island play in New York and both look good. Each section of the country has teams capable of ranking around the top. Working out .under Walker's eye were Duke's Mike Souchak at end and Billy Cox in the back field, North - Carolina's Center Irv Holdash, Tackle Roscoe Han sen, and Back Dick Bunting; N. C. State Center John Martin; and three Wake Forest stars. The latter included Tackle Jim Staton and Backs Carroll Blackerby and Bob Jones. Holdash To Play In Shrine Bowl Huck Holdash. Tax Heel All America center, has accepted a bid to play in the East-West All-Star game in San Francisco Dec. 30. Holdash will play with the East team in the Shrine Bowl and will report after the game between the Southern Conference All-Stars and the Richmond Rebels in Richmond this, weekend. Holdash is one of the few Tar Heels to play in the Shrine Bowl. UNCMatmen Open Season - - - - I : January 18 Athletic Director R. A. (Coach Bob) Fetzer yesterday released Carolina's eight - match 19 51 wrestling schedule which opens with a meet against Virginia Mil7 itary-Institute here Jan. 13. In all .there are four" home matches. Other ; teams ; '' visiting Carolina are all Southern' Con ference f pes, Davidson, Maryland and defending1 conference champ ion Washington and Lee. The fea tured intersectional match for the Tar Heels has been scheduled with the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis Jan. 27. Navy and W. & L. are the only newcomers. The Tar Heels will begin the season without the services of ace grapplers, Oscar Gupton and Phil Kemp. Kemp, a two-time South ern Conference champion in the 157-lb. class, recently went on active duty with - the Air 'Force. Coach . Dick , Jamerson's boys Swill, go into the meet with a rec ord of 45 straight Southern Con ference victories. Duke was the last to beat them, winning in 1939. In addition, Carolina has a 78-12 record for the 12 years since the team has been organized. : The Tar Heels will start an all sophomore lineup of Buddy Baar cke, Barry Wall, and Stan Tink ham in the 300-yard medley relay. Captain Jimmy Thomas and Cecil Milton compete in the 220 yard freestyle against Duke's Mel lon, one of the better swimmers in the" conference.
