DALLAS, Tex., Jan. 12 (UP)
The National Collegiate Ath
letic Association today threw out
its controversial sanity code, the
high-principled regulation adopt
ed three years ago to purify
sports, and slapped a year's ban
on live telecasting of intercol
legiate football.
In its national convention, the
NCAA cut the heart out of the
code by giving "control and re
sponsibility for conduct of inter
collegiate athletics" to the insti
tutions themselves or their con
ferences. Close Voie
Opponents of the code had a
narrow squeak, however, with
the secret ballot showing 130 in
favor of the code-killing 'Amend
ment D" and 60 against. That
was a three-vote margin for anti
code elements, who needed two
thirds, or 127, votes.
Technically, the NCAA will still
have on its books a "code," but
it becomes a mere piece of paper
for reference by the conferences
or independent schools. Without
penalty, they will be free to in
terpret the remains of the code
with whatever lattitude they
want. . '
TV Banned
The NCAA also banned, for at
least one year, live telecasting of
intercollegiate football.
The National Convention vote
on banning television was over
whelming 161 to 7 for adoption
of a resolution imposing a year's
moratorium because TV has "an
adverse effect on gate receipts
and, if not controlled, seriously
threatens the whole structure, of
intercollegiate athletics." I
One of the outstanding princi
ples of the code preserved for the
books was that on recruitment of
athletes, prohibiting official of
fers by schools of "financial aid
or other equivalent inducement."
But the conferences or schools
will be their own judges.
And stricken from the NCAA
books was that section which lim
ited athlete aid to tuition and
"stated institutional fees." The
way was opened for direct finan
cial aid.
Gymnasts Set
For Tonight
Bill Meade's Carolina Gymnasts
will make their first appearance
of the season between halves of
the Carolina-Davidson basketball
game tonight.
The three events to be exhib
ited will be the high bars, parallel
bars, and the flying rings. Jim
Madison, Check, Goodin, and Tom
Harrison will perform on the par
allel bars while Madison, Good
in, and Andy Bell will be on the
high bars. Performing on the
Hying rings will be Harrison,
Goodin, and Murray Cooke.
The Gymnasts will open their
season against Georgia Tech in
Atlanta next Saturday, and to
night's exhibition will be a
warm-up for the season's opener.

Tat Heels To Meet Davidson
Here Tonight, W. Vti. Monday
Carolina's basketball
which put an end to an eight
game, losing streak Thurdsay
against Wake Forest meets
scrappy Davidson tonight and
high-powered West Virginia Mon
day night in home games.
Both are Southern Conference
contests and begin at 8 p.m.
Davidson brings a . tough team
that has been hampered by lack
of height this year and that, like
the Tar Heels, has a spotty record.
However, last Tuesday night
Coach Boyd Baird's Wildcats
pushed N. Cl State to the limit
before losing 61-70. , They held
a lead over the conference pace
setters most of the game, once
stretching it to 13 points.
Carolina nipped Davidson 72
69 In ah earlier game this year,
which saw the Wildcats effective
ly employ the zone defense dur
ing the first half and the man-for-man
during the second.
Three Over Six Feet
Guard Dutch Hengeveld, and
Forwards Don Lazenby and Tom
my Haller, all of whl are over
the six foot mark, form an effec
tive vscoring combination. These
three, plus Center Bill Brooks,
who did a great job of guarding
Sammy Ranzino, and Guard Mal
colm McLean will probably form
the starting line-up.
The Tar Heels will stick with
their line-up which won for them
against Wake Forest. Sophomore
Forward Jack Wallace is the top
scorer with 181 points in 12
games for an average of 15 points.
Center Howard Deasy is second
with 166 points and Forward
Vince Grimaldi is third with 140.
West Virginia, which meets
Duke tonight in Durham, will
draw a capacity crowd Monday
night in Woollen Gym..

Meet U. Va.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Jan.
12 The University of North Car
olina's swimming team arrived
here this afternoon where they
will meet the Virginia University
swimmers tomorrow evening.
Under the supervision of their
coach, Richard Jamerson; the un
defeated Tar Heels went through
a short workout in the Virginia
natatorium shortly after their
arrival.
The Charlottesville crew, paced
by the sensational diving of Bill
Edwards and Jim Westlake, will
b& out to upset the favored Tar
Heels.
Swimming relations between
the two schools began in 1939, the
first year a Carolina team was
formed. The Tar Heels fell by
the wayside 30-45 but bounced
back in 1940 to reverse the score.
r ; Heels Win Two
vln the other two meets, Caro
lina was the victor by scores of
54-21 and 61-14. Pete Mullis, pre
sently an instructor in the Phy
sical Education department, was
ai member of Carolina's 1939
squad.
The North Carolina squad will
be led by it's nationally-ranked
captain, Jimmy Thomas, who has
established himself as one of the
greatest swimmers in the East.
Thomas' latest accomplishment
was a new intercollegiate mark
in the 200-yard backstroke earlier
this week.
Chic Hallock, distanceman for
the Cavaliers, will be out for a
first place in the 440-yard free
style when he meets Carolina's
hgihly touted Cecil Milton. Hal
lock has shown great improve
ment in the past two weeks and
should be ready for this encount
er. In a preliminary meet, the Tar
Heel freshmen will meet the Uni
versity of Virginia's freshman
team.
TOBACCO GROWERS
Mat men To Face VM.I.
In Season Opener Today
Light drills featured the Caro-. 1949 season and the Keydets have
lina varsity wrestling practice been undefeated since,
yesterday as the groaners pre-1
pared for their opening match
against VMI. The match will be
this afternoon at 4 o'clock in
Woollen Gym.
A new coach and largely new
talent predominates the Carolina
squad. Sam Barnes, the Tar Heel
mentor, will be facing his former
charges this afternoon when the
Tar Heels meet the VMI squad.
Barnes coached the Keydets for
four seasons before the war and
returned there in 1947, where he
remained until he came to Caro
lina last Fall.
VMI, champion of last year's
Southern Conference dual meet
schedule, will have three of the
conference's top wrestlers with
them when they take on -the Tar
Heels this afternoon. Heavyweight
Jerry Eggleston, 130-pound Irvin
Perry, and lightweight Johnny
Jorden all hold high honors in
Conference competition.
Barnes expressed optimism con
cerning the Tar Heel team re
gardless of its lack of experienced
men. Only two lettermen will be
present on the Carolina squad
Tommy Cox and Bill Schwartz.
Other experienced members are
Ken Stucky and Ernest Rams
dell, freshman wrestlers last year.
Wrestlers spotted in the intra
mural tourney have been work
ing out well, however, and Coach
Barnes will be going along with
three of them tomorrow. They
are Jim Hagsdale at 157, Lyn
Bond at 177, and Ted McLaughlin
at heavyweight.
Chigger Qualles will be wrest
ling at the 147 spot.
