THE SUMMER SCHOOL WEEKLY Friday. August 2. 1357 FORMER HEAD COACH So rays from the Showers BY DICK BURROUGHS Lost; One Good Swimming Coach The resignation of Ralph Casey as varsity swimming coach has taken one of UNC's foremost coaches. Casey left to take a similar post with Southern Illinois University. After 19 years association with the University it is surprising that Casey would leave after reaching the peak of his. coaching prowess. Hi brought the NCAA championship meet to Chapel Hill this past season and since taking over the head coaching reins from Dick Jamerson in 1954 has had a remarkable record. - Considered to be one of the finest swim mentors in the country, his announcement brings with it the end of a great era in Tar Heel swimming. Between Casey and his predecessor, Dick Jamerson, Carolina has won 16 conference swim titles and tied for one. During one period they won 54 consecutive meets. It is a shame that Chapel Hill should lose such a fine coach. $$$ Football Improvements $$$ It was so hard for the grid team to have pride in the antique facilities of Kenan Field House that said building is being com pletely renovated. The locker room will be spacious; all showers will be tiled; and the entire facility will have excellent ventilation. An addition is being built to the Monogram Club by covering the terrace back of the Club. This will provide a private training table so that the first 44 football men will be able to lunch and sup at the club. This along with the sleeping facilities' improvements at Kenan Stadium and the complete rebuilding of Navy field should provide much of the needed material substance for the team to have pride and be able to hold its head up high. If a team is being taken care of like champions, it is only right that they play like champions. How Old Is Old? How old does a man get before he is old? Thirty, forty, fifty years old? Well, now let's look at the leading hitter in the baseball world today. Yep, that's right, the splendid splinter from bean town, Ted Williams. Ted is' 39 years old and still going strong. He leads all the youngsters with the blazing speed and strong arms. What does Williams have? Good eyes, strong wrists but most of all, a great desire to be the greatest hitter in the game he loves so much. There are plenty of others, too; Enos Slaughter on the diamond, Tjmi ni-A7n em ihe- gridiron, and until recently, Archie Moore in the ring to name a few. All these men love their sport and until they get tired of playing, they will never be old. It Occurs To Me THAT it was more enjoyable to watch Tommy Jackson in be tween rounds than while he was fighting. The "hurricane" may get fr frnrn Arthur Murrav if he decides to quit the fight game. THAT Bill Corum added a great deal to TV with his humorous comments during the championship fight. The Tar Heel watchers at GM laughed continuously at the wise remarks passed on by the stout gentleman at ring-side. . . VARSITY ! Today-Saturday The Young Don't Cry Sal Mineo James Whilmore J. Barclay, who was replaced in 1956 by present Head Coach Sunny Jim Tatum after having several lean years at the helm of the Tar Heels, served under Tatum at Maryland from 1947 to 1949 and was Jim's assistant at Jacksonville Naval Base in 1944-45. "We think George will do us a lot of good," commented Tatum. Head Coach Jim Tatum re leased the list and expressed pleasure over such a large group of native sons who are football players choosing the State Uni versity for their higher educa tion. Three of the group, ends Joe Loflin of Fayetteville and Charles Rogers of Durham and center Bill Talley of Burlington, are present ly enrolled in summer school. Four will compete in the all star high school game at Greens boro. They are Tom Honeycutt of Asheville and Vernon Hoyle of Durham, ends; Jim .Shumate of North Wilkesboro, tackle; and Ed Carroll of Wilmington, guard. The entire group: ' Ends: Tom Honeycutt, Ashe ville; Vernon Hoyle, Durham; Joe Loflin, Fayetteville; Charles Rogers, Durham. Bud Carson, who played for the Tar Heels back in the Charlie Justice era, has been acquired to handle the freshman. "I just hope I can help them," Barclay said, at his- University Service Station here in Chapel Hill. "I'm looking forward to my return to coaching." Barclay points out that he will only serve on the staff during the regular football season and spring practice because he plans to maintain his service station which he has operated since leaving coaching in 1956. Following a successful year as top man at Washington and Lee in 1949, Barclay came to Carolina, and coached under Carl Snavely until taking over the head coach ing reins from his predecessor in 1953. Barclay never had a winning season here but will certainly be a -great asset to Coach Cheek and Coach Hickey in coaching the defensive team. "There are few coaching staffs who have the advantage of a specialty in this field with the experience which he has had in the game of foot ball." Coach Tatum added. No. 1 Team Adds Tourney, Notre Dame To Cage Card The nation's No. 1 basketball team has added two , attractions to their coming season an inter sectional clash with Notre Dame and the Kentucky, Invitational tournament.
