GRAVELY TB PATIENT AND VISITORS Mrs. Loit Bithop of Raligh, eenttr, a TB patient at Gravely
Sanatorium in Chapel Hill receives a visit from William E. Thompson, left. President of the Bank of
Chap Hill, himself a recent patient at Gravely, and President William C. Friday of the Consolidated
University of North Carolina who Is 1958 chairman of the Christmas Seal Sale Campaign.
Friday Pays Yule Visit
To Gravely TB Patients
President William C. Friday on a mcnt and probably another opera-
prc-Yulc visit to Gravely Sana
torium on the eve of the 1953
Christmas Seal Sale campaign in
North Carolina called on Mrs.
I)is Bishop of Raleigh, typical of
the thousands of Tar Heels who
have tuberculosis. Friday is chair
man of the drive this year. ,
Mrs. Bishop knows what it means
to be among the 90,000 Americans
TB strikes each year regardless of
age, sex, race or economic status.
A TB patient at Gravely Sana
torium in Chapel Hill, Mrs. Bishop,
age 30, was found. to have TB by
the Wake County Health Depart
ment in 1256.
Today, aided by modern treat
ment methods, most patients can
be "cured" in a matter of months.
Mrs. Bishop, however, was not so
lucky. She has had drug therapy
and one operation and still faces
many more months of drug treat-
tion before her disease is expected
to be controlled.
This, in itself, is a tough prob
lem but Mrs. Bishop has other
anxieties to overcome which threat
en the effectiveness of her treat
ment. She finds it hard "not to
worry" about her four young chil
dren who had to be placed in
boarding homes.
The outlook for Mrs. Bishop's
eventual recovery is good but she
will not be able to "forget her TB'
even after she returns to her fam
ily because there's no certain or
permanent cure.
That having TB is a "life-time
proposition" is well understood b:
W. E. Thompson, president of th
Bank of Chapel Hill. He was a str
dent at the University in 191f
when his TB was discovered. Since
he has suffered two relapses ir
1924 and 1958.

Thompson is quick to point out
that there are 1,750,000 ex-TB pa
tients like himself who must take
special care of themselves" to
avoid relapse. From this stand
point alone TB is a tremendous
public health problem. .
