Stray Greek Organization
Preserves Bonds Of Sorority Life
In a sorority which doesn't have
a chapter here?
Then perhaps you would like to
affiliate with the Stray Greeks, an
organization composed of sorority
I girls whose chapters are not rep
resented at UNC.
The group was founded here in
1944. It has gained more and more
recognition on campus since then,
and its membership totals right
around 30.
During the year they handle the
Panhellenic Post office during sor
ority rush week, and each mem
ber serves as a Panhel adviser in
her own dormitory.

tivity at Carolina? Ask any upper
classman, and he'll tell you that
the most popular spot on campus
for casual conversation, friendly
get-togethers, and chats with co
eds is a square of asphalt beside
South Building known as Y-Court.
The bench-lined square is lo
cated in front of the YMCA, where
late sleeping students who miss
breakfast may grab a cup of cof
fee and a doughnut during the 10
minute break between classes.
It has been estimated by expert
observers that a high percentage
of romances here got their start
on a bench in Y-Court or perhaps
on the steps of South Building.
Y-Court has- other uses, in addi
tion to serving the cause of l'am
our. Almost any weekday morn
ing, a. dedicated scholar may be
seen pouring over a formidable
looking textbok, oblivious to the
light hearted trivialties of the
world around him, an expression
of intent concentration on his
face. Ah! A straight "A" student,
you say to yourself. Not so. The i
poor lad probably gave his all for
the fraternity cause the night be
fore, and now must do something
about that mid-term exam nexti
period. j
The administrative moguls in
South. Building also have a good I
use for Y-Court. The brass has j
made Y-Court its favorite retreat
from the cares and worries in- j
volved in running a University. I
Here they can relax in unsophis
ticated comfort, rubbing elbows
with the man from the lower quad
and the lowly freshman from
Hicksville, USA.
Y-Court is a common denomi
nator. It serves as a common meet
ing ground for all those who call
Carolina their home. Football he
roes, student leaders, deans, cam
pus personalities and just plain
old Joe College guys gather; all
are one in Y-Court
They've told you about the Car
olina tradition. This is it.

Dramatic Activities Here Too
UNC Has 24 Social Fraternities
And 7 Sororities On The Campus
One of the foremost questions in
the minds of of new Carolina stu
dents is whether or not to pledge a
sorority or fraternity.
The Greek letter organizations
constitute an important segment of
student life at UNC. There are 24
social fraternities and 7 social sor
orities with chapters on campus,
with an average of 50 members in
each group.
It used to be that a student want
ed to be in a fraternity or soror
ity more than anything else while
at college. At one time it was al
most necessary to be in one to en
joy college life to the fullest extent.
However, that situation no long
er exists. Social fraternities and
sororities here play an important
part, but they are not necessary to
a well rounded college life.

Students interested in joining a
fraternity will be given a frater
nity interest card during registra
tion on which he will list those fra
ternities in which he is interest!.
DECISION
The decision to join a fraternity
or sorority is an important one.
There is much to gain from fra
ternity life in the way of lasting
friendships. A fraternity or soror
ity is more than a party group.
The sisters and brothers will be liv
ing companions during their stay
at Carolina.
Rush will begin soon after your
arrival at UNC. It is regulated by
the Panhellenic and Interfraternity
Councils. The IFC is made up of the
president of each fraternity and 3
representative of each house. The
IFC president for 1959-60 is Ashe
Exum, a senior.
PANHEL AND IFC
Each of the seven sororities be
longs to the Panhellenic Council,
which is composed of the sorority
presidents, rush chairmen, one rep-resentative-at-large
from each sor
ority and one representative from
the Stray Greek organization.
These two councils are the gov
erning bodies for Greek letter
houses. Not only do they make rules
but also enforce them.
Some of the rules include social
activities, coed visiting, fraternity
drinking and other conduct.
If a student pledges a fraternity
or sorority, he or she is eligible to
be initiated at the end of the first
semester if a "C" average, has
been maintained by the pledge.
Students who are unable to de
cide and need more time to make
up their minds can wait and go
through informal rush, which is
held throughout the school year,
beginning shortly after formal rush
is over.
DENTAL HYGIENE
The class was told to write the
rules for proper care of the teeth.
