FAQ I P0U1 THE DAILY TAX HZ1L THURSDAY, OCTOBER t, IfSf 1 1 Cross Country Training TIhj U.N.C. cross country team is using revolutionary ideas for train ing. Over the years, with many ex cdlent runners, Coach Dale Ran ioq has found what he considers the test type of training in repetition of short distances. While he has used the idea in the past, this is his first full year of siressing the idea of repetition of 100, 220, 330 and occaional 410 yards. He also has the boys do long distance running, consisting of al ternately slow and fast paces. Coach Hanson says that this type ol workout should be used in high school. He has sent pamphlets on short distance running to over five hundred coaches at the North Caro lina high school clinic. Rescued by the clutch pitching of Bob Shaw and Dick Donovan and the spectacular running catch by Jim Rivera in Tuesday's fifth game, the White Sox were the 11-10 choice to win Thursday The Dodgers, how ever, remain a solid 2Vi-l favorite to win the Series. Only three clubs ever have bounced back from a 3-1 deficit to win a world championship. One of them, the 1903 Boston Red Sox did it in a best-of-nine series. The 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates rallied against W ashington. And of course the New York Yankees did it against Mil waukee last year. Podres was manager Walter Al ston's choice to work in Chicago, if necessary, even before the fifth game. Th 27-year-old left-hander from Witherbee, N. Y., was a 4-3 winner in the second game at Co miskey Park when the Dsdgers rallied after he departed for pinch hitter Chuck Essegian. He was a two-time winner for the Dodgers in 1955 when they captured their only World Series. Lavoie Heads S.C. Offense COLUMBIA, S. C., UP) The shadow, Phil Lavoie, is leading the University of South Carolina foot ball team to what could be an un created season. All through his college career, Lavoie has played in the shadow of ether fullbacks. Now in his final year, he has come into his own. He rates among the national scor ing leaders with 38 points in his first three games. The 205-pound, 6-1 bruiser from Lynn, Mass., finally got his chance in the season's second game when All-America candidate John Saun ders was knocked out for the year with a shoulder injury. Lavoie promptly scored 18 points against Furman and 20 in a smash in" 30-14 win against a strong Geor gia team. Unlike most fullbacks, Lavoie is a heads-up runner, like most half backs. He swivels, slides, whirls and plows as the occasion demands His best run this year was one of C7 yards for a touchdown against Georgia, when he was hit three times, but spun off tacklers. He ripped through Georgia for 77 yards. In leading the Gamecocks to a 3-0 record, he has rushed for 157 yards. Phil is expected to be the big man again Saturday when the Gamecocks take on North Caro lina at Chapel Hill. tOMANT VAIN COLOR VARSITY ) 1 l-n-s-a-n-e m STUDSO 1 CARDS lS tx; For Those Sick, Loved & Hated Friends VIVA LA DIFFERENCIA ! i , Traditional short shirts in Mil ton's new slimmer silhouette, fine single (hidden stitching) tailoring, perfect roll collar pull over button-down in many new unusual patterns.
