L Coxhead Phone 9-2052 mmpj VORBC LIFE This coiumn represents a return to the world of sport; writing j after a voluntary absence of over three years. We might mention in passing that it is also a voluntary return. Of all the weird animals in the newspaper zoo, the sportswriter is the strangest of the lot. He must be reporter, critic, editorial writer, special investigator, press agent, cynic and hero-worshipper all in one. He has a tremendous amount of power and should rarely misuse it. He has more editorial liberty and freedom from interference than any other employee on the paper with the possible exception of the columnist. Whereas the news-writer is confined rigidly to lact, this editor considers a sports story dull, drab, and almost worthless unless colored by the personal opinion of the writer. We believe in more features on all phases of the athletic scene, vastly extended t'overag; of the mis-named minor sports (i.e. -swimming, lacrosse, socaer), and a thorough presentation of intramural activities, space a!lowifv,r. A very brief word about views on "big time" sports. School spirit, is a direct outgrowth of athletics. School spirit makes for a ,mbr" diversified and happier campus life. It also binds the student to th'j 'University with that undefined love for alma mater. The Carolina. a:;d this editor's, philosorhv is that winning te help to build a greater University. They make the students hapy. They make the alumni happy. The latter are more prone to support th school, both morally and financially, when the teams win. Triis 'iipnert is a giant step toward the realization of the University's main goal maintaining its status as a great educational institution. A sportswriter creates heroes because it is his business to do 5so Personally, this writer has few, if any. heroes. Neither do we belli -in creating goats. If there conies a time when we cannot say sop ttrng good about a Carolina athlete, we prefer to say nothing at ;i" I)esp;te its varied functions, the Daily Tar Heel is primarily a studrr' newsoaper. We derive no pleasure whatsoever from the chastizemei ' of a fellow student because of an unfortunate athletic mistake. Car lina athletes are not animals. We will match them scholastically l extra-cui ricularly with any other segment of the camnus and place : wager in their favor. Those who claim that their marks or accomolisH moots are due to their athletic prowess alone are merelv inventing : , feeble excuse for their own failures. Perhaps we know these boys to' well. We are more concerned with keeping their weaknesses out o' 4Vie paper than with putting them in. The college athlete deserves a. "espite from the glare of the public spotlight which is constantly focused on his private life. i The reader will notice that this column has been renamed 'On The Bench.' We wdl try to present Carolina athletics from the inside Too often those on the outside make pitiful Monday morning quarter backs. The title also has some personal significance; that is where this columnist spent the vast majority of his own athletic career. 1 MURALS TODAY SOCCER 4:00 Phi Delt vs. winner (ATO-DU I) 5:00 NROTC vs. winner (Chi Psi-DKE), Theta Chi vs. winner (DU-2 vs. Zeta Psi) BADMINTON 4:00 Alexander vs. Parker 4Vers, Joyner vs. Manley; 4:45-Peacocks-2 vs. Physics Fiends, Everett vs. winer (Joyner vs. Manly); 5:30 Law Sch vs. win ner (Peacocks-2 vs. Physics Fiends); 7:00 NROTC vs. Ay cock Cocks, Ruffin vs. Lewis; THE GREATEST TECHNICAL ADVANCE IN RAINWEAR AQUA 5 Developed In Braitain In s , , i".
