!An Introduction
Carolina In The Summer
When The Livin' Is Easy
(Editor's Note: The following
story was written as an intro
duction to Chapel Hill, for the
benefit of those students who
are here for the first time. In it
you will find a running account
of things to do and places to go
during your stay at Carolina
no matter how long or how short
jour stay may be.)
BY RON SHUMATE
Summertime is characteristic
ally a time "when the livin is
easy.
It's a time when the minds of
most turn to thoughts of merry
vacations to thoughts of beach
es, mountains and cross-country
trips.
The summer is a time when
young children are turned loose
to romp about, getting into a
little bit of everything and driv
ing tired parents as well as
o ledr brothers and sisters to
distraction.
Some of these older brothers
and sisters seek solace by go
ing away to school. That may be
the reason you're here. Or you
may need quality points.
Whatever the reason, the fact
remains that you're here. And
you'll be here for at least six
more weeksmost of you, any
way. So while you're here, you might
as well enjoy it as much as you
can.
After you manage to unpack
all your things and discover
how many things you left at
home (i.e., your swimsuit, two
pairs of bermuda shorts, your
fountain pen, your alarm clock
and a jar of peanut butter),
you'll begin to look around to
see what's what and who's who.
If you aren't too loaded down
with academic work, you'll dis
cover that, surprisingly enough,
you have some spare time on
your hands. This tends to be
particularly true after the sun
disappears from the sky and is
replaced by the moon.
Since most of your extra-curricular
activities will be con
fined to the nighttime hours, it
is probably best to tell you first
of what there is to do and where
there is to go after sundown.
If you're a flick fan, there are
two theatres in downtown Chapel
Hill the Carolina and the Var
sity. Just east of town is a drive
in. If you find nothing at either
of these three that arouses your
interests, Durham is only 12
lei ms away. In Durham you'll
find several movie-houses, in
addition to a few drive-ins.
A free flick is shown each
Thursday night in Carroll Hall at
7:30 p.m. The second session
schedule for these movies will
be found elsewhere in this paper.
If you have a need for feed
ing your' face, the places are
many. On compus there is Lenoir
Hall and the Pine Room. Snacks
can be had in the basement of
Graham Memorial which is
dealt with more fully below.
Uptown you'll find, beginning
on East Franklin St., the Dairy
Ear, Harry's, the Rathskellar,
N. C. Cafeteria, the Village
Cafeteria, the Goody Shop, the
College Cafe, the Carolina Cof
fee Shop and the Tar Heel Sand
wich Shop.
If it's beer you crave, you'll
find it in plentiful amounts at
the Tempo Room, Harry's, the
Rat, the Goody Shop and the
Shack. And while we're speak
ing of alcoholic beverages, there
as an ABC store east of town
in case you haven't located it
Elready.
If you're a savage beast and
need to be soothed by music,
that is Kemp's is the place for
you. Here you can browse, lis
ten and look to your heart's con
tent. The Carolina Sport Shop
also has records.
If you're a bookworm, try the
Intimate Bookshop downtown,
the Bull's Head in the basement
of the Library or the Book-X in
the basement of Steel Hall.
For camping-out safaris, you
can load up on enormous sup
plies of food at Fowler's or the
A & P, both located on W. Frank
lin. If it's steaks that satiate your
hunger pangs, try the Ranch
House, on Hillsboro Rd. north
of town.
In case you have to leave town
in a hurry, the bus station is
down on W. Franklin. '
As you struggle to that 7:30
class, you might want to grab
a donut and a cup of boiling
hot coffee at either the Scuttle
butt or Y-Court.
YCourt is also a good place
to fraternize away that between
classes break which, inciden
tally lasts only 10 minutes. Just
remember to hold that donut
high, some enterprising young
dog will snatch it away from
you. Watch out especially for the
brown boxer.
Graham Memorial, the student
union, contains a spacious
lounge loaded with the latest
magazines (sorry, boys, no
copies of Playboy) and card
tables if you're a bridge fan.
Downstairs in GM you'll dis
cover the Pool Room and the
Rendezvous Room 'both air-conditioned.
If you came here shag
gy, there's also a barber shop
in addition to several downtown
shops, and a couple of beauty
shops for the coeds.
There's also a TV room in
GM, and another set on the
mezzanine. Upstairs are the stu
dent government offices and the

dies out you can always try
Kessing Pool even if you can't
swim.
The pool does contain water,
though judging from the number
of folks who go down there just
to lie and look at it, you might
wonder.
And then there's the library.
It's that large building there
across the street from the Bell
Tower. It has books in it, along
with magazines (in the Business
Administration - Social Science
room).
The stacks that's the place
where most of the books are
are very cool but you can't
smoke, talk, drink or curse in
there. But it's a good place to
spend an afternoon, neverthe
less. The last place on our list is
the Arboretum. There's no par
ticular significance in placing it
last, it's just that it's always
nice to end an article on a
pleasant note. i
The Arboretum is a place you
can go to study nature. Many do.
Many students have found the -Arb
especially helpful in pass- j
ing courses in botany, as well !
as anatomy.
It's as someone once said:
"The Arb is a place to go park I
when you don't have a car."
Recent changes in cables for
underwater communications have
necessitated changes in the equip
ment of cable-laying ships. A mock
up of such a ship has been built
on top of a mountain in New Jersey.
