Married Students' Housing Near ing Finish
By JOE MEDLIN
The 222-apartment married
student housing project, .begun
in February, 1959, is nearing
completion. Two-thirds of the
apartments are now occupied
and all units will be filled in
September.
Thirty-two of the. 34 buildings
have been completed and ac
cepted by the University. The
remaining two are now in the
final stages of construction and
are slated to be completed soon.
One-third of the apartments
are single bedroom unite. The
remaining units contain two
bedrooms and a kitchen, bath and
combination living room-dining
room.
The two million dollar self
liquidating project was financed
by the Housing and Home Fi
nancing Agency. Single bedroom
apartments will rent for $60 a
month and two bedroom apart
ments will be $70 a month.
One of the new features of the
project is a single 60-foot tele
vision antenna serving all 34
buildings. Each apartment has
. a wall outlet similar to an elec-
trical outlet into which a TV
antenna wire may be plugged.
"This feature eliminates un
sightly TV antennae cluttering
the roofs of the apartments and
provides good antenna service
" for all," said UNC Business
Manager J. A. Branch.
The apartment buildings are
built in two basic designs. Four
different- types of brick were
used. All design combinationj
harmonize well with the natural
setting.
"We have taken advantage of
the natural beauty of the set-
ting and have received many
compliments on the beauty of
the development," Branch said.
Underground cables service
street lights and eliminate un
sightly overhead wires. All
streets are paved and guttered.
Paved sidewalks are featured
both in front and back of all
. buildings. Ample parking space

be planted in the fall and land

playground area is also planned
for the near future.
The project is on Mason Farm
Road, near Victory Village, the
old married student housing
area. .
Three new streets in the de
velopment have been named for
William S. Bernard, Eugene C.
Branson and Addison Hibbard.
All three are University profes
sors of a quarter-century ago.
All were noted for their excel
lent teaching ability.
Bernard was a professor of
classics at UNC from 1900 to
1938. Branson was professor of
sociology from 1913 to 1933. He
organized and headed the De
partment of Rural Social Economics.
