First Issue
This is the first of eleven weekly
issues of the UNC News. The News
is edited completely by students.
A three-man editorial board ad
vises the staff. The board consists
of William Long, asst. dean of stud
ents; Pete Ivey, director of the
UNC iNews (Bureau; and Kenneth
Byerly, professor of the Journalism
School.
The News will be published every
Thursday morning and distributed
to the various living units.
The editor of the weekly, is, Jim
Clotfelter. Bill Hobbs is co-editor
andyGeorge Strong is business man
ager. Any interested student 'may
wife for the newspaper. ;
: Letters to the editor ' will ' be
printed as space permits. The edi
tors particularly encourage letters
and columns which take different po
sitions from those which7 they hold.

Former DTH Editor To Be Intern ,
The New York Times has ap
pointed a UNC student editor to a
one-year "internship" with the
Washington Bureau of the Times.
The student will be an assistant in
research and correspondence to
James B. Reston, Washington cor
respondent for the Times. ;
Jonathan Yardley, editor of the
Daily Tar Heel during the past
year and an English major in the I
University was annoqnced as the
first intern .in . a 1 program to be
initiated by Reston. Yardley is a
native of Chatham, Va., was -graduated
from Groton School in Mas
sachusetts before coming to Chap
el Hill - .
Yardley will report ;for work in
Washington July 1st. He graduated
at the 1961 Commencement exercis
es at the University here Monday.
