THE UNC NEW6 4 Students To See Red Festival Pediatrician Gets Lifetime Grant In Medical Research -4 McCOKKEL'S IS HELSINKI UNC students, Jim and Christine McCorkel study the "China Record," preparing to attend the Eighth World Festival of Youth and Students for Peace and Friendship held in Helsinki, Finland. This hus- Four Carolina students will be in attendance when the Communist-sponsored Eighth .World Festival of Youth opens Sunday in Helsinki, Finland. The four will join more than 10,00 other students from all parts of the world for the meeting for "Peace4 and Friendship." The four, Jim and Christine McCorkel, Roger Foushee, and Jim Roberts, plan to report back to North Carolina their evalua tions of the reactions of the Afri can and Asian students to Com munist propaganda at the con ference. "We will try," McCorkel said before leaving, "to evaluate the successes and failures . of the Communists in their attempt to woo the uncommitted to their party-line views." Cultural Propaganda Mrs. McCorkel, an amateur photographer, will be attacking the problem fro manother angle as she attempts to analyze the eCfcctheness of the use of paint ing, art and music as propagan da. The Helsinki World Festival, which is described as a cultural and political meeting, is estimat ed to cost the Soviet government between $60 and $120 million. Travel fare for many of the stu dents is being paid by the So viets, as was also the case at the last such festival in Vienna in im Political discussions, dramatic and musical events, and sports competitions highlight the week long meeting. In 1959 and 1950, he spent 14 months in Ghana as a work-camper and student. He has also been a represen tative of the United States Na tional Student Association to a work-camp in Tunisia, and a member of the work-camp con nected with Operation Crossroads Africa. Foushee, a graduate student Y Schedules Film On Monks An unrehearsed, filmed inter view with monks in the Anglican Community of the Resurrection in Mirfield, England by British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC TV) will be presented in a pub lic showing by the YMCA-YWCA in Carroll Hall on 'Monday night. The 30-minute interview which elicits the views of the monks on God, sex, wealth and the mean ing of freedom, has been com mercially released in the United States under the title "Poverty, Chastity and Obedience." In a review in the New York Post, film critic Archer Winsten wrote that "There was a kind of personal richness and refine ment, wholly visible in these beautifully photographed and stu died faces ... Van Wyk, research professor of pediatics at the UNC School of Pediatrics. The Career Award is among the first made by the National Institute of Health, to provide stable support for established in vestigators in various schools of medicine. The initial award is for a five year period, but is renewable during the lifetime of the recipient. Dr. Van Wyk has headed the division of endocrinology in the department of Pediatrics at Chapel Hill since 1955.
