of the Dept. of Government of
Florida State University.
The first edition, which ap
peared in 1959, has been widely
used in American colleges and
universities.
The Prothro-Irish book, say

divided into five parts with a
thick folio of photographs intro
ducing each section.
The authors begin the book
with sn analysis of several com
mon traits that lie "at the core,

Three UNC female graduate
students are recipients of stip
ends from the American Associa
tion of University Women Edu
cational Foundation for one year
of study toward an advanced
degree under a brand new pro
gram. The women will be studying

supported in 11 southern states
under a three-year demonstration
program of $225,000 from the
Rockefeller Brothers Fund. A
total of 18 women in 11 Southern
states have been accepted for this
first academic year of the pro
gram. The objective of the program
is "to increase the resources of
qualified personnel for higher
education."
UNC students on the program
are: Mrs. Donald Stanford of
Chapel Hill, a student in the De
partment of History; Airs. Sallie
Pridgen Anderson of Elon Col
lege, a student in the Depart
ment of English; and Mrs. Doro
thy Cansler of Chapel Hill, a stu
dent in the Department of Psy
chology. Each of these students will
be working toward a master's de
gree. The 11 Southern states with
participating graduate schools of
regionally accredited colleges
and universities which are in
cluded in the program are: Ala
bama, Florida, Georgia, Kentuc
ky, Louisiana, Mississippi, South
Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vir
ginia, and North Carolina.

tage of the 19f0 census to assess
the changes in the American
population during the past decade
that have had significant politi
cal repercussions. The nature of
Federalism in the licht of recent
trends and new programs in in
tergovernmental relations has
been- reapraised in the new edi
tion. Attention ' is also focused

Applicants must also have a ma
jor field of study offered by a
participating graduate school

teaching, research or administra
tion; and may not have recently
been on a college or university
faculty or in a graduate study
program.
Each student in the program is
awarded tuition and fees for one
academic year of full-time study
plus a grant-in-aid to be deter
mined on the basis , of demon
strated need but not to exceed
$600 for one academic year.
