Thursday, September 17, 1964 THE DAILY TAR HEEL Page 3-C I -la -r iirsiiigfSchooI Receives Federal Funds Federal funds totaling about one quarter million dollars are being rr .ade available to the UNC School of Nursing to help practicing nur ses update the skills and techni ques they need in their day-to-day jfes. Six federal grants have been approved to finance a long-range, comprehensive continuation educa tion program for nursing teach ers, administrators, ancl super visors and practicing nurses. These grants range from a "single appropriation of $4,000 for faculty development in diploma schools of nursing up to a fou year grant of $132,000 to improve the nursing care of the aged and aging. Br. Eloise R. Lewis, professor of nursing, Margaret C. Mocce, assistant professor of nursing, and Mrs. Mary Snyder, instructor in nursing, have been assigned full ime to the expanded continuation ; education program here. The program, as they envision it? is based on the premise that there are many able nurses now in leadership positions who need and want further development of their skills, but who can't, for any number of reasons, leave The Luscious Sophia EVERY FRESHMAN'S FAVORITE PIN-UP Sit ' A 1 s& Ms w?w'& a Wit f - t4Sn 1 Beautiful Sophia Loren dis plays her lovely coiffure in this scene from Joseph E. These nurses can and will attend short, , intensive study courses several times each year. No other school of nursing in North Carolina provides an op portunity for continuation educa tion in nursing. - :..'-i'-' What is the UNC School of Nurs ing doing with the nearly $250,000 in federal funds? The general pattern of the con tinuation education program is to bring the same group of nurses to Chapel Hill to .work on a sub ject for five days, repeated three or four times each year. This pattern began to take shape in June. when .30 adminis trators of diploma schools of nurs ing from the Carolinas and Vir ginia spent five days in the class room here studying the principles, and techniques of adminisration. They will return next month and again in January and April. This program is sponsored by the U. S. Public Health Service' with an initial grant of $13,000, with equal amounts each year for the next two years. Later this month, 30 faculty members from diploma schools of nursing will be here for a five day session designed to assist them in learning more about teaching the late adolescent student. This course will be repeated in Novem ber and again in February. SILVER GETS AWARD Frank Morris Silver of Leaks ville has won a $500 scholarship award to UNC from Chemstrand, announced Dr. Julian Mason, di rector of Student Aid. Officially designated as the "Chemstrand Company, a Divi sion of Monsanto Company Award," the scholarship is given annually to a chemistry major who shows interest in a career in industry and derr.xtstrates scholastic excellence. . Silver, is a senior and a mem ber of Alpha Chi Sigma profes sional chemistry fraternity. In mid-October, ten adrninistra tors of collegiate schools of nurs ing will arrive to spend five days studying the principles of adminis trative organization and leader ship. An $3,000 federal grant for each of three years is 'making this program possible. Scheduled for late October and to be repeated for different groups next March and May will be a five-day course to assist collegiate nursing faculty mem bers in increasing their skills in understanding college students as learners. Teachers in programs for prac tical nurses will seek a better understanding of the adult stu dent as a learner at a five-day continuation education session here in-late November. This ses sion will be repeated next March. A $30,000 grant, , renewable in the same amount each year for another three years, will be used to improve the nursing care of the aged and aging. This geron tology grant is from the Chronic Disease Division of the U. S. Pub lic Health Service. Instruction in gerontology will be provided for teachers in all types of nursing programs col legiate, hospital anl technical edu cation institutions and for , sup ervisors, heard nurses and practi titioners in all types of health agencies. And, finally, the N. C. State Board of Health and the UNC School of Nursing are working jointly , on a long-range program to improve the nursing care of expectant mothers and newborn babies. A pilot session is sched uled in November for teachers of maternal and child health in nurs ing schools, public health nurses and nurse supervisors of obste trics ; and pediatrics. They will spend three days at UNC studying the health aspects of pregnancy and childbirth. The directors of UNC's unique continuation education program emphasize that their plans under the federal grants do not preclude the sponsorship of short-term (one, two and three-day) courses to be set up as nurses in the state make their needs known to the school here. They envision in the near fu ture a refresher course for cur rently inactive nurses wanting to return to full cr part-time employ ment. And there are plans for ad ministrative training for directors of nursing in small (100-bed or under) hospitals in North Carolina.
