STs VDiiiLJiii 11 iiJillCD Terp Rally Kills Clemson Chances By KEN ALYTA RALEIGH US) Third-seeded Maryland opened the Atlantic Coast' Conference champion ship basketball tournament with a hard-earned 61-50 victory over Clemson's tenacious Tigers Thursday. Second-seeded North Caro lina State met Virginia in the second game with the winner meeting Maryland in the semi finals Friday night. Concluding first-round games Thursday night matched top seeded Duke against South Carolina and fourth - seeded North Carolina against Wake Forest. ' Gary Ward, whose 18 points and 13 rebounds led Maryland, hit three baskets within two minutes just "after Clemson' had gone ahead for the only time in the game. Ward's outburst put the Terps ahead 52-48 with less than three minutes to play and they held on the rest of the way for their eighth straight victory. , . Maryland had taken a 10 point lead late in the first half and was on top at the inter mission 32-27 before Clemson began whittling away. WOMEN'S INTRAMUKALS The Women's Intramural Basketball tournament is well underway with 19 teams in the competition. The teams are divided into 4 leagues and a round robin tournament is being played in each league. The winners of each league will then play a single elimination tournament for the champion ship. At the present these teams are undefeated: Spencer I, Whitehead I, Spencer II, Ke nan, Kappa Delta, Nurses I, and Pi Beta Phi. South Carolina, beaten in 16 of 22 previous starts this sea son, had been outscored by 67 points in losing two earlier games to Duke, the nation's eighth-ranked team. Duke, showing only occasional flashes of brilliance, had moved to a 35-23 lead at the hlf and Maryland Heavily Favored In ACC Wrestling Tourney COLLEGE PARK, Md. UP) Maryland is heavily favored to win its 12th straight wrestling championship when it hosts the Atlantic Coast Conference tour nament Friday and Saturday. The Terrapins have never lost a dual meet in the ACC, having won 54 straight includ ing four this winter by lopsided scores. They beat Virginia 25-2, N.C. State 26-3, Duke 26-0, North Carolina 27-2. In these meets, Maryland lost only one match. N.C. State's Bob Brawley, last year's 167-pound champion in the ACC, beat Bob Karch. The Terrapins' 167-pound entry in the competition Friday and Saturday at Cole Field house will be Tim Geiger, who finished fourth ahead of Braw ley in the NCAA . tournament last year.
