Five University of North Car olina faculty members with a combined teaching service of al most 175 years are retiring at the end ol this academic year. They are Drs. Isabelle Car ter, professor of, social work; Earl H. Hartsell, associate pro fessor of English; Gerald R. McCarthy, professor of geology and geophysics; H. D. Meyer, professor of sociology and an thropology; and R. B. Sharpe, professor of English. Dr. Carter, who joined the faculty in 1937, has been ac tive as a social worker in the field as well as teacher of the practice of social casework. - The Isabelle Kirkland Carter Award recently was established here in her honor and will be given annually to the outstand ing social worker in North Carolina. Hartsell, who. joined the fac ulty as instructor in. 1936, and took his undergraduate and graduate , degrees from UNC, teaches, and does research in 19th" century English literature. McCarthy is a former chair man of the Department of Ge ology and in 1958 was elected president of the North Carolina Academy of Science. He has been on the faculty here since 1922 and is the author of nu merous articles in the fields of geology and geophysics.
