But what do you do when the girl you want to marry is so busy talking on the telephone that she hasn't even the time to hear your proposal? This is the plight of Ben in the opera The Telephone, one of two operas to be presented by the Opera Workshop in Hill -Hall at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Both the Telephone and IX Campanello, the other opera, will be sung in English. Ad mission is free. Dr. Joel Carter plays Ben and Rebecca Carnes, his spouse to be. Charles Horton, a doctoral candidate in musi cology, will direct the UNC production of the Telephone for which Robert Steelman will serve as piano accompanist.. The 20 minute opera is per haps one of Minotti's most famous works" and has been produced many times since its first performance in 1947. II Campanello, by Donizetti, is the story of the Pharmacist Don Annibale, "sung : by . Joe Turpin, who tries in vain to find a little privacy with his wife on their wedding night. The problem is Enrico, the bride's spurned, but not squelched,, lover. . Taking advantage of a city ordinance which requires pharmacists to fill emergency prescriptions at any hour, En rico visits and revisits the couple, each time in- a differ ent disguise. The role will be sung by Bert Adams who won the District Metropolitan Op era Auditions in 1964.
