Survey Reveals Menial Stresses Public health nurses in 30 North Carolina counties who questioned their patients about emotional problems conclud ed that about one of every three patients showed "a st ress level in the range of psy chiatric disorder." Negroes were under less stress than whites and wo men showed considerably less stress than men. The study, reported on here for the first time on March 31 at the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropology As sociation, was conducted by the Department of Mental Health at the University of North Carolina School of Pub lic Health. " It wag undertaken to find out the extent of knowledge about mental health and ill ness among public health nur ses in order to develop a train ing program to increase their effectiveness. Dr. Dorothea C. Leighton and Miss Nora Cline' of the UNC public health faculty de cided on the basis of their limited study that little, if any, change is needed! in the tradi tional manner in which public health nurses contact their patients. They added, "The nurse who enters a home to give an in jection or bathe a bed patient Come for a Browse Through All the Great Buys at the Friendly Old Intimate where You're Always Welcome Night or Day. "With more education, who can perform this familiar func tion better than the public health nurse?" "The differences should be regarded as hints and trends worth considering in suggest ing some of the correlates of stress and the means by which stress can be lessened," they said. .They found, for example, that stress seemed to decrease with a rise in family income. "This finding," they told their audience, "suggests that a guaranteed adequate in come might go far to relieve, the psychological difficulties of the poor."
