3 Carolina swimmers
Are State Interns
EDnring Summer
Five Carolina students were
among 22 state government
interns in Raleigh this sum
mer as part of a program
sponsored by . the UNC Insti
tute of Government.
The five Bill Taylor, Gayle
Farrell, Jeff Beaver, Mike
Brown and Doug Johnson
had assignments in various
government agencies and saw
the day-to-day operation of
the state's services to the
people.
In birweekly seminars, the
interns met to discuss their
ideas about government and
politics with such state lead
ers as Secretary of State

The highlight of the sum
mer was having lunch with
Governor Moore at the Gov
ernor's Mansion.
Taylor, a law student and
intern in 1966, served as as
sistant coordinator of this
year's program. While work
ing in the governor's office as
sisting in speechwriting.
Farrell, a med student
worked with the Department
of Mental Health and worked
with Umstead Hospital in But
ner while Beaver did statisti
cal research with the Board
of. Juvenile Correction. He
summed up the summer as
"very interesting, most valu
able and very rewarding."
Brown's main project for
the summer was a study for
the Budget Division on the
use of automatic data pro
cessing in higher state edu
cation tacmties.
