The winners (84). edged a
strong James A-DKE (79)
team by taking the archery
event and finishing second in
table tennis and foul
shooting. -
Not surprisingly, James A
DKE annexed the half-court
basketball crown in addition to
a runnerup finish in handball.
James A played a semifinals
basketball game last night in
the residence hall loop, while
DKE has reached the Greek
finals.
The Granville B-PiKA (78)
squad got' no firsts or seconds
but fnished high enough in
enough events for a strong
third.
Finishing fourth overall was
Lewis-Phi Gam (76), second to
Avery-Zete in swimming.
Stacy-Kap Psi (75) beat Ehr
mghaus A-ZBT and Granville
B-PiKA in the relays and end
ed up No. 2 in half-court
basketball.
Other event titlists included
Carr-Phi Delt in badminton,
ahead of Grimes-Sigma Nu,
first place winners in table
tennis. Granville H-Kap Sig
shot the most foul shots.
Old East-Beta captured the
handball points and shot the
second most foul shots.
A good crowd watched the
fraternities and residence halls
compete together. Last year's
winner was Old West-Kappa
Sig.
Meanwhile, intramurals was
in its busiest stage as com
. petition continues in soccer,
softball, bowling, basketball,
and table tennis.
Badminton joins the fun
beginning Monday.

"The government ought to be
spending money for recreation
programs instead of riot
defenses," said Ben Ruffin to
the . students of Ehringhaus
Wednesday night
Ruffin, Director of the
United Organization for . Com
munity Improvement, spoke on
"Explosion or Erosion in
Urban Culture.
"Most of the facilities in the
Negro . community are sub
standard. There needs to be
more and better recreation
programs to give the Negro
something to do," he said.
"The Negro is tired of being
discriminated on," said Ruffin.
This is why he is rioting. If on
ly the white, society would act
instead of always reacting,
there would not be any
violence." ,
"The Negro only wants an
opportunity to live like
ordinary americans. He is
tired of being considered as
'less a person'.". ;
"The programs devised to
help the Negro are no good,"
said Ruffin. "They are ali
headed by white people. The
Negro knows his own situation;
he is the one to help himself.
tm
"The American govtrnment
is so wastefuL Schools should
stay open during the summer
to give kids somewhere to go
and spend their time instead of
walking the streets with
discontent " he said.
"If only the whites would
first show action and give the.
Negro equality, the whole pro
blem would be solved," Ruffin
said. -
"For nearly 300 years we -were
in slavery. We were
brought over to slave and
given no right to an education.
Now America tells us that we
have to bear the same tests as
the white man." .
"The Negro is not responsi
ble for mis mess. It is the
white man's thought and
responsibility to accept us now
and get us out of this mess,"
said Ruffin.
"But it will take 'feeling to
induce any kind of action. If
. this doesn't take place, the
civil war of races will continue
to get worse," he said. 9
Ruffin said the Negro is tired
of being segregated an d
discriminated on. "He is not
going to live the life he has liv
ed for so long any more."
