Leimoindls To Pitch Today

Atlantic Coast Conference
baseball begins for Carolina
this weekend when the Tar
Heels host three conference
contests.
Maryland, one of three se
cond place finishers last
season, invades the UNC dia
mond today for a single game
while UNC meets Virginia in
a doubleheader Satin-day.
Gametime for the Terp en
counter is 3 p.m. Saturday's
twin bill will begin at 1:30.
Carolina, 5-1 to date, tied
Maryland and South Carolina
for second place in the ACC
last year.
Coach Walter Rabb has nam
ed his three ace starters,
David Lemonds, Tom Buskey
and John Yancey, to inaugu
rate the conference slate.
Lemonds, a sophomore
lefthander from Charlotte, will
start against Maryland. He has
MTflK
COTiJEJDD!
a 1-1 record and low 0.65 earn
ed run average. Lemonds has
struck out 23 in 14 innings
pitched.
Buskey and Yancey will han
dle mound chores Saturday in
the two seven-inning games.
Buskey, 1-0, has hurled 14
2-3 scoreless innings. Yancey,
also 1-0, has pitched six innings
and recorded a 1.50 ERA.
"I'll let them go as far as
they can," said Rabb. "I hope
they can go all the way. We'll
have to get full performances
from &our pitchers with all
these doubleheaders."
Righthanders George McRae
and Chip Stone and southpaw
John Richards will be available
for relief work.
The rest of the lineup is
set except for left and right
field. It is still uncertain
whether regular left fielder
Neil Wester will be -ready after
a leg injury. Wester has miss
ed several games with the in
jury and Gary Tolley will
replace him agam if the leg
hasn't mended.
Right field is up for grabs
between Clem Medley and
Doug Lanham. Medley started
at the first of the season but
has not hit well. Lanham, a
freshman, is a hefty portside
swinger.
Maryland has a strong
pitching staff according to
Rabb. Tom Bradley, a junior
righthander, was one of the
best hurlers in the ACC last
year with a 5-2 record and
1.79 ERA. He will probably
start today's game.
"They have several young
pitchers besides Bradley," said
Rabb. "They also have several
new faces in their field."
Virginia,- sixth in the ACC
last season, should be much
improved. The Cavaliers beat
South Carolina in a
doubleheader in Columbia
earlier in the season.
"Any time you beat South
Carolina once, especially down
there, you're a pretty good
team," said Rabb. "When you
beat them twice, you're extra
good."

Gene Hamilton Deftly Hits A Backhand
... As Carolina Whitewashes Williams, 9-0
North Carolina's tennis team
swept to its ninth straight vic
tory Thursday by drubbing
Williams College of
Massachusetts 9-0 on the UNC
courts.
It was the second straight
shutout that the Heel rac
queteers had administered to
Williams. Coach Don Skakle's
crew blanked the same team
Tuesday.
Gene Hamilton, the defen
ding Atlantic Coast Conference
champion in singles, set down
Ed Cunningham 6-1, 6-3.
Hamilton has lost only once
this year.
Bob Davis remained un
defeated by taking two of three
sets from Bruce Simon. Davis
won 6-4 and 6-3 and lost 1-6.
Lee Langstroth shut-out
Wayne Eckerling 6-0, 6-0 in
the battle of third singles.
The fourth singles match
went to Bill Trott. He decision
ed Peter Kinney by a 6-1,
6-1 count.
Fred Rawlings won the fifth
singles over John Fulkerson.
The final results were 6-2, 6
2. Joe Dorn defeated Dave
Blackford 6-3, 6-1.
In the battle of first doubles,
Davis and Rawlings again pro
ved too much for their
Wflliams foes. Picking up their
ninth consecutive win of the
season, the Tar Heel pair was
6-1, 6-2 conquerors of Simon
and Kinney.
Bob Hershey and Jack
McBroom played the second
doubles for Wflliams and the
results were not much dif
ferent from the opening con
test. Carolina's Trott and
Hamilton won that match in
comparatively easy manner.
The score was &4, 6-2.
In the final doubles,
Blackford and Eckerling were
the victims of another Tar
Heel shutout. Langstroth and
Dorn were victorious 6-0, 6-0.
Carolina will be in action
again tomorrow on the UNC
courts. Harvard will supply
the opposition. The two teams
were slated to play Wednesday,
but were forced to call off that
meeting because cf rain.
The Heel netters play their
final home match before
Spring break on Monday. That
game will be an ACC match
with Clemson. Coach Skakle
will then take his team south
for matches with Jacksonville
and Florida.

Pat Boone, who usually
croons a pretty good tune, was
singing the blues in Greensboro
Wednesday.
The singer-actor and half
owner of the Oakland Oaks
of the American Basketball
Association was in the Gate
City to play in the pro-am
of the Greater Greensboro
Open.
The reason for Boone's
sadness was that the Oaks'
number one choice in the col
lege draft, Bob Kauffman of
Guilford College, signed with
the Seattle Supersonjcs of the
NBA instead.
Boone's number two selec
tion, Henry Logan of Western
Carolina, has reportedly
already signed a $120,000 three-.
year, no-cut contract.
Oakland's third choice, Skip
Harlicka of South Carolina, has
not yet signed.
The ABA got the jump on
the established NBA by con
ducting an early draft. The
NBA held its first round selec
tions Tuesday six weeks
before they, were scheduled in
an effort to sign the top college
prospects before they inked
with the other league.
The big surprise in the NBA
picks was that Ail-Americans
Larry Miller of UNC and Don
May of Dayton were not
selected. The top chocies were
Elvin Hayes of Houston, Kauf
fman of Guilford, Wes Unseld
of Louisville, and Tom
Boerwinkle of Tennessee.
Gary Gregor of South
Carolina was a surprise pick
of Phoenix's new expansion
team By the way, Hayes has
reportedly dropped out of
school.
Perhaps Carolina should
have second thoughts about
trying to sign 6-6 All-America
prep star Dennis Wuycik. It
seems that the Tar Heels lose
almost every time he sees
them play.
Wuycik was at Chapel Hill
the night South Carolina upset
UNC. He was on the West
Coast as the guest of UCLA
when Carolina lost to the
Bruins in 'the national finals.
According to reliable
sources, Carolina is high on
Wuycik's list of schools.
Dave Corliss, a graduate stu
dent working on his Ph.D in
physical education and assis
tant freshman basketball
coach, is in Australia. Dave
is working for the Billy
Graham Crusade there.
He is finding time to keep
up with his basketball though,
coaching and playing in an
amateur league.
