House Undergraduate Library Muildin As the University grows at a rapid rate in student enrollment, the physical plant must expand also to accomodate the growing demand for living and academic space. In past years, emphasis has been on living quarters with six new residence halls constructed in the past seven years. This semester, it is apparent from the construction work across campus that the emphasis has shifted to the area of academic quarters. The main undertaking this year is in the student complex built beside the Wilson Library. This new complex, when completed, will include an undergraduate library, a new book exchange building and a new student union. Due to numerous holdups, the library and the student union will not open with the beginning of classes as originally scheduled. The book exchange building, however, is open at this time. Work on the student union was held up due to a mishap in which, during construction, the roof caved in last spring. The undergraduate library completion is being held up due to the late arrival of book shelves from the Estey Company in New York. Other new buildings are also slated to open either at the beginning of this semester or during the term. The new Law Building will be open with the beginning of this semester, providing full court room instruction space for law students. Other construction work planned for the near future includes an addition to Bingham Hall, home of the English building and a new p h y sical sciences-chemistry building next to the present Venable Chemistry Hall. Medical facilities at Carolina are expanding at a rapid rate and will include facilities on dental education, nursing, health affairs library, an ambulatory patient care facility and a basic educational facility for the medical school. Perhaps the building which will cause the most relief for students is the new book' exchange building which should aid in alleviating the long lines prevalent at the beginning of past semesters. This new structure, a $1.5 million building known as the Josephus Daniels building, will be one of the most modern and best equipped college stores in the nation. The former bookstores, the booketeria, the Y-Court Exchange and the Bull's Head Bookshop will be brought together in this new building. The new Daniels building will be primarily a book oriented store, according to Tom Shetley, general manager of the University Student Stores system. The store will also carry a full line of school supplies and toiletries in addition to the usual collegiate items, such as jerseys and decals. Required textbooks and a complete line of study aids will be housed on the top level of the three-floor building. All required texts will be displayed unlike the system in the basement of Steele Hall last year. The main level of the Daniels building will house the student supply area and the former Bull's Head Bookshop line, which was in the basement of Wilson Library last year. The Bull's Head section will contain over 22,000 volumes of pleasure reading material, according to manager Mrs. Beatrice Vedel. In addition to the selection of books, it will also carry scientific and technical magazines and journals. As well, a selection of scholarly and literary periodicals in both English and in foreign languages. Another first in the Daniels aroun building will be a closed circuit television system with seven cameras to cover 80 per cent of the selling area. This is the first time such a theft-preventive device has been used in a college store. Also new in the book exchange will be 250 lockers on the top level of the building for use by commuting students . .--V-" v and South Campus residents who can use thern for a 25-cent deposit. When the student returns to pick up his belongings, the 25 cents will be returned to the user. The bottom level of the building will house the receiving docks and storage rooms. Also, the University Duplicating service will be located in this area. In addition to the Daniels building, the Student store will operate a snack bar and Parisian style coffee house on the main floor of the new student union.
