"If Humphrey could change his view on Vietnam which I sincerely doubt I could support him in a way, but I could never admire him like I do McCarthy. Actually it doesn't make much difference who is elected now. You can't say we helped the nation by getting Humphrey bad publicity, because Nixon as president would be just as bad. That's what's so bad about it all the people really don't have a choice in the election." He pointed out that he had no ties with any political party. "I would have supported Rockefeller if the Republicans had nominated him, but he had about as much chance as McCarthy. No, my devotion to McCarthy is not blind. I realize as much as anyone that his campaign was not as much dependent on the will of the man as it was of the people opposed to the war. McCarthy is a political Messiah only in the sense that he was the man picked by the people to give the movement a leader." Bitter but more than anything else tired, he motioned for his "old lady and told me he didn't feel like talking any more because "now it does no good.' He will go back to. the University of Automated Weather CODY. Wyo. "Look, man," he concluded with a wave of his hand, "I've told you nothing you don't already know."
