(UPI)-Purdue stumbled through three periods but put together two touchdowns in the final period to pull out a 28-27 victory Saturday over upset-minded Wake Forest. The winless Deacons shocked the fifth-ranked Boilermakers by taking a 17-7 halftime lead and held a 27-14 margin with 12 minutes lest in the contest. But Purdue's all-Am erica Leroy Keyes came to life in the final period and sparked the Boilermaker offense with determined running. Keyes had fumbled six times in the first three periods, and Wake Forest recovered four of them. The Deacons converted three of the recoveries in two touchdowns and a field goal. Purdue, which iost its top rating when it fell last week to Ohio State, got a touchdown on a 14 yard run by Jim Kirkpatrick with seven minutes remaining in the contest. Reserve quarterback Don Kieport, filling in for the injured Mike Phipps in the waning minutes of the game, guided the Boilermaker offense on the final scoring drive, capped by a two-yard run by Keyes with only 1:15 to play. That tied it and Jeff Jones bested the extra point for the winning margin. Keyes Deacon got Wake Forest off and running with a 28-yard field goal in the first period. Then fullback Jim Johnson galloped 24 yards in the second stanza to give the Deacons a 10-0 spread. The Boilermakers finally got on the scoreboard in the second period when fullback Perry Williams plunged from the 2-yard line, but Wake Forest's star quarterback, Freddie Summers, moved across from four yards out to give the Deacons their halftime advantage. Buz Leavitt caught a seven-yard pass from Summers for a touchdown in the third period and Deacon booted a 38 yard field goal in the final stanza. Phipps, who had an off day last week at Ohio State, again was off form before being injured. He completed only four of 10 passes for 40 yards, while Kiepert pitched one completion in three tries and Keyes ws unsuccessful in two throws. In all, Purdue was 5 to 15 for 42 yards passing, while Summers connected on 22 of 31 for 182. (UPI) - The Maryland Terrapins mounted a bruising ground attack and scored the winning touchdown on a pass interception Saturday to edge South Carolina 21-19, as the (lamecocks missed on a pair of two-point conversion tries, the second with only 3:36 left to play. The game featured Maryland's running attack against a wide-open passing barrage by South Carolina quarterbacks Tommy Suggs and Randy Yokum in the mud at Byrd Stadium and the Terrapins led all the way. South Carolina missed on a pass play in an effort to go ahead by a point in the fourth period and failed again on a run following its next touchdown which would have tied the game. The terps's winning tally came in the fourth period when Dean Landold picked off a Suggs pass at the South Carolina 26 and ran it in for a touchdown. The game marked the return to the lineup of fullback Ernie Torain after a two-year layoff and on his very first play Pastrana hit him on a 33-yard touchdown pass. The Terrapins scored their second touchdown in the second period on a 54-yard drive with Pastrana hitting Torain and Ron Pearson, and Lovett plunging through the line. Lovett finally plunged over from the four. South Carolina set a new team record for passing yardage with 273 yrds, eclipsing their previous high of 240 against Nebraska in 1963. (UPI) -Clemson quarterback Billy Ammons passed for one touchdown and ran for another in an attack sparked by the running of backs Buddy Gore and Ray Yauger Saturday to hand Duke a 29-22 defeat. Ammons completed his first touchdown pass in 11 attempts with Clemson trailing 7-6 in the third period, a 59-yard toss to flanker Ron Miller to put Clemson ahead for the first time. Ammons ran in from the one yard line midway in the fourth period for another score. Gore, who early in the game broke Clemson's career rushing record of 2,172 yards, scored in the first period with a 57-yard run, shaking off Duke tacklers all the way. Duke quarterback Leo Hart, the Atlantic Coast Conference offense leader, completed two scoring passes to end Jim Dearth, the first an 11-yard play early in the first period and the second a sLx-yarder late in the high-scoring fourth period in while Clemson scored 27 points and Duke 15. Halfback John Cappellano scored Duke's other touchdown a two yard run with less than a minute remaining in the game. Yauger scored late in the third period with a 15-yard run, breaking two tackles. Charlie Waters, who was Clemson's starting quarterback before an injury early in the season, limped into the game as a flanker and scored in the fourth period on a 37-yard pass from alternate quarterback Tom English. Tailback Charlie Hook iced the cake for Clemson with a 12-yard scoring run with two minutes left in the game. David Pugh added both of Duke's points after touchdown, but missed a 39-yard field goal attmept in the second period. Jimmy Barnett kicked three extra points for Clemson and missed two others. Alternate Duke quarterback David Trice passed to flanker Wes Chesson for two points after Capellano's touchdown.
