Just ask Frank Howard. Howard's football team, the Clemson Tigers, moved within a single game of their third straight Atlantic Coast Conference championship Saturday. But Howard's best football player, halfback Ray Yauger, broke his arm as Clemson beat Carolina 21-14. "I could have prevented the injury," HO ward said. Yauger, with 201 yards in 35 carries, was within 33 yards of a Tiger rushing record, and the Clemson boss wanted to give him a shot at the record after taking his star out late in the third quarter. "I would have hated myself if I hadn't given him the chance. But now I hate myself for putting him back," said Howard. "Carolina coach Bill Dooley, who has seen his share of good players and has seen his share of injuries to good players, called Yauger "unbelievable." '"I know Buddy Gore (also hurt) is a great back, but this Yauger is going to make Clemson fans forget him real fast." Dooley. remarked. "You can't stop him with your arms. We even hit some solid knocks several times and he still went for extra yardage." Clemson needs only to beat South Carolina this week to sew up the ACC crown. But they'll have to do it without Yauger and Gore. South Carolina, which has the unenviable task of try ing to sidetrack Clemson might have been looking ahead last Saturday as the Gamecocks fell to Virginia Tech 17-6. N.C. State appeared to have its mind on other things such as Clemson as it went into the second half of its game with Florida State. The Wolfpack, depending on UNC or USC to do away with the Tigers' title bid. faltered m their attention of FSlfs Ron Sellers. Sellers caught onlv three passes aginst State, but one was a 35 yarder in the third quarter that set up the Seminoles for the kill. They moved in for a 48-7 massacre of the Pack. In other games Saturday, Penn. St. bombed Maryland 57-14, Duke downed Wake Forest 18-3 and Virginia outgunned Tulane 63-47. Coaehing was too tenuous and uncertain. So Johnson switched his major from physical education to recreation. He wants to work at home in Washington, helping kids find something which they can do well, something which gives them dignity. He's humble, shy, sensitive all that. But Pete Johnson wants to do something with himself. He won't draw the billing of a Rusty Clark, whose medical career will probably be closely followed by those who watched him. But Pete Johnson will go his own quiet way, doing what he knows best, and accomplishing much in what he hopes is not a losing cause.
