THE DAILY TAR HKEL
Better 1967 Stats
iieeis
Carolina scoring statistics
after four games show Tar Heel
team and individual totals well
ahead of last year's figures,
which produced a 28-4
uon-Ioss record.
UNC is averaging 95.5
points a game to date
compared with H'.i.l average
last season. This is chiefly due
to a much improved shooting
percentage.
The Heels are shooting -18.8
percent from the field, 70.9
from the foul line. The
17-HK team hit only 45.5 per
cent from the floor and 04.8
from the line.
Almost every returning
player is also doing better than
his last season's performance.

Forward Kill Hunting has
the most improved statistics.
After averaging only 7.9 points
a game his junior year. Hunting
is hitting at a 16.5 clip this
year. And from the field.
Hunting has jumped from a
42.7 percent mark to 00.5,
tops on the team.
He is also up in rebounds
with nine a game, against 5.8
last yoar.
Charlie Scott, leading scorer
with 23.8 points per contest, is
well ahead of his 17.6
sophomore average. Scott's
rebounding is also up. 10.8
compared to eight a game.
Guard Dickie Grubar and
center Rusty Clark are the
prime reasons for the Tar Heels
are hitting free throws. Foul
shooting was probably the
weakest part of last season's
team.
Clark has hit 11 of 12
charity losses for 91.7 percent.
He connected on only 64.8 as a
junior.
Grubar, who hit just 71.1
percent of his foul shots
before, is now shooting at a
81.6 pace. The Schenectady,
N. Y., senior's scoring average
also shows a major increase,
from 8.1 to 13.8.
Guard Eddie Fogler, starting
this year after playing as a
reserve last season, is naturally
scoring more with added
playing time, but his shots have
also been dropping much more
consistently.
Fogler. who hit only 32.1
percent from the field and 65.4
from the line in his first varsity
season, is currently connecting
on 52.6 percent from the floor
and 100 percent of his foul
shots.

Gymnasts
To Open
Saturday
Carolina's gymnastics club
will host their first meet of the
season Saturday night in
Woollen Gym.
The UNC club will face an
intermediate team from
Virginia, and the Tar Heels
should be slight favorites.
There will be six apparatus
used in the meet: rings, parallel
bars, side horse, floor exercise,
high bar and the trampoline as
an exhibition.
Carolina has some promising
gymnasts on its first organized
club, and Coach Fred Sanders
is hopeful that a supporting
audience will be on hand.

The Rise Again
By PETE LEWIS
DTH Sports Writer
Last Saturday's victory over
South Carolina sparked a
revived optimism for swimming
at UNC.
After beating South
Carolina easily, 76-37, the
tri-captains, Dave Ball, Fred
Danneman and Jim Edwards,
and Coach Patrick Earey
expressed their feelings about
this suprisingly easy victory
and the strength of the team.
"This is the highest spirit
I've seen reflected by a team at
said
this point in the season,'
Earey.
"We knew we had the depth
and potential champions,"
Earey continued, "but I didn't
expect to see it this early in the
season."
"Quite a surprise," said
Danneman. "There were some
very good performances."
Coach Earey felt that
Danneman may have "set the
pattern of the meet and the
season" with his fast
backstroke leg in the first
event, 400 medley relay.
"Fred came through as a
captain," praised Earey.
"There were some surprises
from the freshmen and they
were a big help," said Dave
Ball. "Everyone did
exceptionally well."
Ball was referring to
performances like Dave
Bedell's first in the 200
butterfly followed by Bill
Wallace
freshman.

Wallace also swam a strong
butterfly leg in the winning
400 medley relay.
These freshmen butterflyers
seem well on their way to
filling the space left by
A 11-American Phil Riker.
Freshman Kurt Chambers
finished first in the 200
individual medley and frosh
diver Steve Neff took fourths
in both diving events;
Coach Earey was "pleased"
with these freshmen
performances.
Edwards, a senior, said he
was "very satisfied about the
outcome of the meet. The
team performed above
expectations."
"I am optimistic about the
season," Edwards continued.
"Maryland should be a good
challenge."
That is what the Dolphins
are looking for. They face the
Terps in Bowman Gray Pool 2
p.m. this Saturday.
Looking forward with this
new impetus. Coach Earey
predicts in his calm modest
tone, "Maryland will be a little
stronger . than . South Carolina, t
If we swim as well as we did
against USC, we should hold
our own."
Upon viewing the smiling
faces after the Dolphins easily
trounced South Carolina, one.
can assume that "confident" is
the word for Earey' s boys now.

Tar Babies Face
Gardner Webb
The high scoring and undefeated University of North Carolina
freshman basketball team faces its toughest test of this young
season Saturday night at 7:30 when it meets Gardner-Webb
Junior College at Boiling Springs.
After two wins, the Tar Babies are averaging 97.5 per game.
They have defeated William and Mary, 94-72 and Gaston College
101-70. Leading individual scorer for UNC is forward Bill
Chamberlain who is hitting for 22.0 points per game. Behind
Chamberlain is 6-5 Dennis Wuycik who has 38 points in two
games, 29 coming against Gaston College.
Chamberlain is also the team's leading rebounder with 21.
Wuycik is second in this category with 17. A 6-9 center, Greg
Corson, is close behind with 16 rebounds.
Gardner-Webb is 3-0 and has hit the century mark at" least
twice. A major factor in their success has been 7-2 center, Artis
Gil mo re.
Gardner-Webb is touted as one of the top junior college teams
in the nation, and several high school Ail-Americans are included
in the starting lineup. . ,; .. , ,; . . ,. .
This could be the Tar Babies toughest test of the season, if not
only because Gilmore is one of the tallest players in the country
and a great rebounder.
Next week, the Carolina frosh play two home games. Monday
evening, in the prelude to the varsity game with Clemson, they
play the Intramural All-Stars and Tuesday, they go against the
Virginia frosh.

Both teams have lost to

The Deacons, after breaking

"If we continue to play like

Wake Forest coach Jack

McCloskey was so overjoyed
with the Deacons' victory over
Temple that he cut down the

Ever since Tech left the
