Saturday, March 15, 1969 THE DAlM' TAR HEEL Page 3 Pro Actor Secrest Returns To UNC In Green's 'Sing All A Green Willow' By JOE SIMMONS If you watch Jimmy Secrest rehearsing Paul Green's new folk-satire, "Sing All a Green vkhiow, you know seeing a pro work. While an undergraduate Dramatic Arts major whines you re 'actors' and can't be bothered with anything else. Too bad." As a Playmaker, Jimmv was seen as Willie Baxter in "Seventeen," as Jimmy in "The Rainmaker," and as Lysander in "A Midsummer Night's Dream," as well as a score of other roles. DTH Playmakers Pre view about having to rehearse on Saturday and the rest of the cast is taking a break, Jimmy Is going over and over a bit of action which involves picking up a girl from the floor and walking offstage with her in his arms. When director Sam Selden has difficulty getting everyone's attention during one of the crowd scenes, Secrest moves closer to the little man in order to "I desperately wanted them to let me do Tom in Robert Anderson's. "Tea and Sympathy" when 1 was here-when 1 was eighteen like Tom was, but it never happened. When 1 finally got to do the part I was twenty-four!" Secrest has appeared with five stock companies across the country and worked at Washington's famed Arena concentrate on what is being stage as resident juvenile. In Los Angeles he did "Come said. ti : : iw inipro . you get is Back Little Sheba" with that Jimmy will know exactly ShirIey Booth and Sid what he s doing when the show Blackmer, who is also a former opens a three night run on Haymaker and will be Friday, March 28. returning to Chapel Hill to Secrest is "jobbing" the role participate in the homecoming of Shadrach in the innovational new folk satire, as Mr. Green calls the play. He was hired for the role and will be leaving for New York as soon as the show closes. "Being a professional actor doesn't depend solely on whether or not you're getting paid," Jimmy said. "Professionalism is a state of mind." Although he is near thirty, he has that good head of hair and intense eyes, characteristic of the eternal juvenile. "The theatre is hallowed ground to me." he said. "When I walk L a house and see a soft drink cup on the floor, I pick it up." For an actor who has appeared on Broadway, in movies, and has guest starred on eight television series, this is quite an attitude. "When I was at Chapel Hill-as Jimmy Scchrestl participated in every phase of -the theatre, and 1 mean every phase from ushering to acting. I don't see too many kids who want to do that now. They are festivities to be held in conjunction with "Sing All a Green Willow." "I got the part because of Blackmer," Secrest recalled. "Several people at the audition could have played the part but Blackmer pointed me out and said to the director, 'Him!' and that was it." In Chicago, a notoriously tough theatre town, Secrest won the Chicagoland Drama Critics Award as the best actor of 1965 for his role as Ensign Pulver in "Mr. Roberts," co-starring with Robert Wagner, star of the current TV series "To Catch a Thief." Jimmy's first broadway assignment, "The Girl in the Freudian Slip," followed, and he repeated that role in Chicago with Alan Young. In Hollywood, Jimmy has appeared in the movie, "Fate is the Hunter," and in the series, "Rawhide," "Dr. Kildare," "12 O'clock High," "Honey West," and as Dr. Hamilton in the daytime show "General Hospital." Italy in what is known in the trade as a "Spaghetti Western." that he described as "a quickie filmed with an international cast but with all the earmarks of an American Western. 'I was broken up most of the time we were shooting because 1 was speaking English, the director was speaking Italian and the leading lady who was supposed to be an Amanda Blake type ("Gunsmoke") went running around the set saving, "Zeig Heil! Zeig Heil!" and the director had to use a translator with everyone. "Of course, later they dubbed whatever languages they wanted the film distributed in but during shooting it was just terrible." Secrest never told me the title of the film. Part of an actor's job is keeping his name before the public and Jimmy has done this by appearing on panel and quiz shows on television. Last April he was a winner on "The Dating Game," being selected over two other fellows by a young model who selected him because he said that re-finishing furniture was one of his hobbies. They won a weekend at the Seaview Inn in Mansfield, Ohio. In "Sing All A Green Willow," Secrest plays the role of Shad, a young man who tries to save a girl from falling under the spell of a fanatical religious sect. Also featured in the production is Carol Case Erskine, as the young girl, lan O'Connell and Elizabeth Tanner as her parents and Joel Carter as a holiness preacher and healer. Gordon Lightfoot will appear in Baldwin Auditorium tonight at 7 p.m. Lightfoot, 30, has been the top make vocalist in his native Canada since 1967, but until very recently he has been known in the U.S. only among dedicated folk nthusiasts. In the . past several months, though, a series of appearances ' in this country accompanied by enthusiastic reviews, has brought Lightfoot to the attention of the American general public. While many other stars have followed the more lucrative path of folk-rock, Lightfoot has endeared himself to fans of true folk music by remaining a purist. His truly fine voice and remarkable guitar technique, assets which many currently popular folk stars noticeably lack, further mark him as a traditionalist. Lightfoot's songwriting ability, his third major talent, shows that a "traditionalist" may be contemporary. "Black Day in July," for instance, is a commentary upon the 1967 Chicago riots. He has composed over 130 songs, many of which have been used by other singers. ;'"" Judy .. : Collins . made : "a memorable recording of Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain," and Peter. Paul and Mary first achieved national exposure with their version of his song "For Lovin' Me." In concert, accompanied by a bassist and a second guitarist, Lightfoot puts on a very exciting show, and is known for his ability to achieve a rapport with any audience.
